The Getting Started: Building a Chrome Extension[1] tutorial doesn't seem to work and doesn't seem to have worked since at least late 2015[2].

What went wrong?
Using the code in the tutorial gives "Cannot display image. No response from Google Image search!" when clicking the extensions icon.
