Looks like a firewall blocking the download perhaps. Getting a sawbuck log would be useful as a first step. Download sawbuck from https://github.com/google/sawbuck/releases/tag/release-0.6.8.0, install it, launch it, then from the Log menu, Configure Providers, change Omaha to Verbose. Now install ChromeSetup.

Hmm, I don't have a firewall, that I am aware of. I downloaded sawbuck, and I have it running, and I ran ChromeSetup (I suppose need to also Log > Capture? I did, because nothing was showing). (Also, do I need to exit Chrome first?) I have a bunch of the following message: INFORMATION <process ID> <thread ID> <time> a^??* 2046 "" Where "a^??*" is approximately the "File" (I don't seem to be able to copy it, and I don't know how to match those symbols). Line is almost always 2046, although I have seen a few 0s (with a blank "File"), and a couple -446787897 (with a slightly different file - something like "?*").

Oh, I figured out how to copy: INFORMATION 11528 6560 20:56:52-991 ǎ^ 2046 WARNING 11528 6560 20:53:50-049 -446787897 INFORMATION 11528 6560 20:29:24-346 0

I closed Chrome and tried again. Now I see more interesting logs. Attached.

The last log I see from process 2412 shows that GoogleUpdate is trying to download http://redirector.gvt1.com/edgedl/release2/APkxRLSdvko6/58.0.3029.96_chrome_installer.exe. Are you able to download that URL via the browser?

I successfully downloaded and ran the installer. It's not obvious what the installer did, though. It appeared to immediately launch Chrome. Chrome's UI looks different, but I'm still running Version 56.0.2924.87 (64-bit), and the About page says "An error occurred while checking for updates: The updater is currently running. Refresh in a minute to check again."

What happens when you refresh the About page?

I see an animation as it checks for updates, and then I get the same message.

If you launch Task Manager, do you see any GoogleUpdate.exe processes running?
,

Yes. I tried ending the processes (there were four) and retrying, and I got the same result.
