I get a white pointer "laser" with a white hoop at the end, which seems to be WAI. I didn't have to press any buttons. The first time, it took a while for the pointer to appear and appeared to when I swiped L-R across the touchpad, but that may have been a coincidence. 60.0.3110.0 and VR Services 1.6.156467194 on a Pixel XL with 7.1.2 N2G470.

Any difference between cardboard vs. daydream mode?

The Pixel did not have the Gamepad Extensions enabled in chrome://flags. When I enabled those, it works like my Pixel XL. I assume this means that the site does not have a valid Origin Trial token and was relying on the WebVR flag being enabled. Please always enable the two flags together or not at all. While they are separate flags, the Origin Trial enables both of them and they are both part of the "WebVR 1.1" implementation.
