Background image not showing correctly in some cases

Reported by pnusc...@boomi.com, Apr 26 2017

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_12_4) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/57.0.2987.133 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce the problem:

1. Use mac and open Chrome
2. Load a page with a repeating background image
3. Switch tabs away and then come back. Repeat until the background image is messed up.

What is the expected behavior?
Should show a repeated background image

What went wrong?
Unclear. The color of the background image actually varies each time it gets corrupted.

Did this work before? Yes Not sure. Just noticed it recently.

Chrome version: 57.0.2987.133 Channel: stable
OS Version: OS X 10.12.4
Flash Version:

Observed this on mac only. Have seen it on Google Data Studio and Aha! so far.

Unable to reproduce the issue on Mac 10.12.4 with chrome #58.0.3029.81

These are the steps followed
1. Loaded the image "https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/17/21/23/172123f5ecc1f62558d160781368282a.jpg"
2. Opened multiple tabs
3. Navigated between tabs randomly

Observed that background image clearly as expected,

pnuschke@ could you please help us with the screen-cast of this issue for further triage.

Here's screencast where keep switching tabs and the background image gets messed up. I couldn't include the whole browser window due to having some proprietary info on the screen.

Additional details - no javascript errors in console. The pattern shown of the garbled background seems to alternate between a few types so it's not purely random.

Hello pnuschke@boom.com, please provide a URL for a webpage that shows this problem, or a transparent image and exact steps to reproduce the problem. Also, your screencast requires flash - please attach a non-Flash version so that we can view it.

I went to aha.io and made a trial account to have a look at what kind of background image it is - it turns out it's a css gradient. I wasn't able to reproduce with 58.0.3029.81 or 60.0.3086.0, though.

I also tried to make a smaller demo with the background part only, but no luck reproducing with that either. pnuschke, is the problem still reproducible with the attached html file?

(Also shrike@, see the .mov of the original flash screencast.)

Yes, I can reproduce with that HTML file. Basically anything that triggers a page to render. I resized the browser and it turned blue.

Thanks pnuschke for your quick reply!

Tentatively tagging this as a Blink issue? Hopefully someone from the Blink team can triage this further.

Do you have a different machine to test on, by any chance? I can't reproduce and nobody else has reported issues, which makes me think it's something about your machine.

What happens if you disable the GPU in about://flags?

This was actually reported initially by a user of our web app initially. I realized that a similar thing as happening in other web apps. So someone with a different computer most definitely had the same issue.
regarding GPU flags, there are several features in flags that mention GPU. Can you be more specific about which feature to disable?

Sorry, I should have been clearer.

"GPU rasterization"
Turning that off seems to stop the problem.

Could you please upload a copy of the output from visiting 'about:gpu'?

This may be related to other "pattern" issues we've seen recently with GPU Raster.
