All unrecognized file extensions open with Chrome Canary in ARC, but that app has no defaults set |
||||||||||||||||||||||||
Issue descriptionGoogle Chrome 58.0.3029.68 (Official Build) beta (64-bit) Platform 9334.42.0 (Official Build) beta-channel samus ARC 3900769 1. Install Chrome Canary through the Play Store app. 2. Create a local file with an unusual extension, like test.asdf (attached). 3. In Files app, double tap the file to open. Expected: A dialog asking what to open the file with Actual: Chrome Canary ARC app opens The Files app context menu for the file lists "Chrome Canary" and "More actions...". Choosing "More actions..." doesn't even include Chrome in the list, only Android apps. I have to drag the file into a tab to view its contents (as plain text). Choosing a different app (like Text) keeps Chrome Canary as the default. This happens with every extension I've tested, aside from extensions that normally open in a browser window or a text editor. So .gn, .cpp, .asdf, whatever, they always launch in Chrome Canary. Note that my Android Apps settings show that Canary has no defaults set, so I can't "clear defaults". I haven't even accepted Canary's initial usage dialog, so the file doesn't open; I just close the app.

Whether ARC is involved or not, Chrome OS file manager's behavior has been to open "some" app that declares to open the file, when there's no default is set. When a default is explicitly set, it opens the default app. It may be a nice thing to propose to file manager team on inserting a resolver dialog here. > It seems to me that Chrome Canary ARC app claiming to be able to open everything is an issue ? I guess what it claims is that it handles "text/plain" MIME type. Since the unknown extension file (e.g., the attached "test.asdf" looks like a text file, probably it's mime type is guessed as text/plain in Chrome OS file manager and Chrome ARC app is responding to it.

Assuming that comment#3 is true, blocking Clank doesn't seem like a real solution here. Other browser apps may still do the same.
