[MD Settings] [Passwords] Make copying passwords (and usernames) easier

Project Member Reported by kolos@chromium.org, Apr 21 2017

Issue description

Copying passwords is one most common use cases of the password page (chrome://settings/passwords). In new MD settings, copying is relatively harder than in the old settings:
1. position mouse to the details button.
2. open menu.
3. click on "details".
4. click on "Show password".
5. select the password and copy.

Recently I tested a bunch of sites on M57 and on M59. So, I copied passwords from old and new pages. I felt the difference... It is annoying.

1-3 were absent in the old page. Could we make password copying easier?
My suggestions:
a) Copy buttons in the "Saved passwords" list (in each row). Perhaps copying is even more common than looking at username/password.
b) Still use "Details" dialog, but:
b1) Open "Details" by double click on a row of the list of saved passwords.
b2) Add "Copy" button near the password field in the dialog.

And one question: Could you please explain why we need "Details" dialog?

IIRCC original mocks were made with this feature in mind: Issue 377410 See go/kumzz

"Details" dialog was originally "Edit password" dialog. API did not exist, so we scaled back to the current "Details" to avoid changing the UI too much.
@kolos are there stats on the usage of copying passwords?

If we decide to improve this, we could add a "Copy password" option to the 3-dot menu. 2 clicks is an improvement over the old settings page since it avoids the need to select & copy the password manually.

Another reason for the dialog is that we don't show in-line textboxes anymore (while quick to use, they're also undiscoverable). So if the url/username are too long they'll just be ellipsized.

We haven't collected any stats.

The main purpose of the password is to check whether there is a saved password for the given site, and then see it and type manually or copy/paste. I suppose it makes sense to copy the password instead of typing it. So, copying credentials must be very common use case.

I like the idea of adding a "Copy password" option to the 3-dot menu. Could we also add an option for username since the username value might be ellipsized?

Friendly ping. Will you have a chance to fix this?

Sorry for the pain and annoyance with the new UI. The primary use case, as I see it, is about the user who has a particular domain in mind and wants to retrieve the password. "Testing a bunch of sites" didn't come up as a primary use case at the time.

"Copy password" option to the 3-dot menu sounds fine to me as an interim, till we have more cycles for this section.

Thanks for the response.

"Testing a bunch of sites" is the primary use case, but repeated many times (and the primary use case will be repeated of course over time). It is just easier to feel the difference when you do it many time in short time.

As you said, in the primary use case users retrieve the password. I believe it makes sense to reduce the number of clicks.
@bettes what do you think?

@kolos -- wouldn't Chrome usually autofill a password for a user? I'd imagine users are more commonly going to the passwords page either to view a password (as they enter it on another device) or to modify/delete a saved one. If that's the case, optimizing for the "Details" dialog makes sense.

Commenting as a regular user. I like the security and convenience of Chrome OS saving my passwords. However, there is no way of copying the saved passwords as a list to keep somewhere in case I'm locked out of my Google Gmail account for some reason.

In the old UI, you could at least just click on the "show" for every single password (very time consuming) > take several screenshots in a row because the list is very long.

In MD you can:
1. only highlight and copy the website, username and password separately
2. only take a screenshot of one password at a time.

So I'm regretting letting Chrome OS save all my passwords without me keeping a list at the same time.

The other reason for why I would want to have a list has become more obvious with the new MD settings. Frankly, it's a pain in the ... way too much clicking to see password.

In passwords.google.com you can still click on the eye icon, one by one, but for how long?

tbuckley@: yes, Chrome should autofill credentials, but sometimes it fails. So, user would address the password page to copy password manually.

dymphep@: thanks for your feedback! There is Import/Export feature https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=341477 It was frozen for a while because of the password page migration to MD settings. We are going launch it on MD settings.
Now you could turn it on with the flag: chrome://flags/#password-import-export. Import/Export will be available at chrome://settings/passwords or chrome://settings-frame/passwords

Comment 11 by dymp...@gmail.com, May 26 2017

kolos@, Thank you!!

FYI import/export was not available at MD chrome://settings/passwords

It is available at chrome://settings-frame/passwords

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; CrOS armv7l 9460.50.0) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/59.0.3071.71 Safari/537.36

@dymphep to confirm that is only if you manually enable the flag?

Actually assigning to bettes@ for question in #8

Comment 13 by dymp...@gmail.com, May 26 2017

Without setting the flag manually, there is not export/import anywhere.

With the flag, only the old UI chrome://settings-frame/passwords can export/import

Has the original issue been solved? We have the ability to copy username and password without going to the details dialog

it doesn't work well on all platforms and with long values.
Issue 820759 and Issue 825921 recently fixed problems with long usernames/passwords to show ellipsis when too long, but also allow selecting the entire text.

Issues brought up by dymphep@ about exporting will be solved by exporting passwords feature, so is no longer relevant to this particular issue.

Can we have updated repro steps that highlight issues w/ specific platforms? Maybe these issues should be their own bugs since this bug is about being able to view/copy several usernames/passwords quickly which appears to be working.
