Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Open http://tunein.com/radio/Radio-Ici--Maintenant-952-s44258/ in a tab
2. Open https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=km-csLudpfk in a tab

What is the expected behavior?
It should be possible to play multiple sounds or videos simultaneously, like you could in previous versions of ChromeOS. 

What went wrong?
After the most recent ChromeOS update yesterday, it is impossible to play multiple audio or video simultaneously (regardless of whether the video also has audio). Trying to play one will pause any existing background audio or videos playing.

I tried this with multiple audio and video sources, and no matter what you do, playing one will pause all the others. For example, if you go to http://tunein.com/radio/Radio-Ici--Maintenant-952-s44258/, it will play radio in the background. If you then go to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=km-csLudpfk, the radio from the previous tab will pause itself. If you go back and restart the radio, the Youtube video will be paused.

Update: I cleared cache and cookies and restarted my Chromebook, and the problem went away.

This bug just happened again on my Chromebook. As before, restarting fixed the issue. Still, the fact that it has happened twice now suggests that it is a real bug in Chrome, and restarting all the time is inconvenient.

Also, it could be coincidence, but I was browsing Facebook both times that the bug appeared.

It just happened for a third time. This time, I wasn't browsing Facebook at the time, so it must have been coincidence.

Anyway, "Manage audio focus across tabs" is disabled.

As far as I know, the only non-default flag I have is that I have the enable-tab-audio-muting on. I'll go ahead and click "reset all to defaults" and see if it happens a fourth time.
It just happened for a fourth time, even with all flags set to the default.
P.S. After rebooting my Chromebook to fix the issue, the trackpad stopped working. Luckily, rebooting twice fixed it.
It just happened again. I'm going to go ahead and change my flags back, since it doesn't appear to make any difference anyway.

If it's related to 713858, there could be something going on with the task scheduler pool. Try looking at chrome://histograms/TaskScheduler.TaskLatency.UserBlockingTaskPriority.MayBlock to see if there is anything unusual going on there?

We don't know what's going on, but it kind of sounds like to me like there are tasks stuck in the task scheduler, effectively reducing the number of active threads down to a small number.

However, it could be something completely different..

A chrome://tracing trace of this happening (ideally with the "task_scheduler" category enabled) would be the only way to tell.

I don't see why single audio would play fine but not two though... the scheduler can handle much more than two sequences.
Is there anything I could do the next time it happens to help debug?

Yes, 

1) open a tab and navigate to chrome://tracing.
2) "Record" -> Edit Categories (add "audio" and "task_scheduler") -> Record
3) Repro the issue
4) "Stop" tracing (ideally before buffers hit 100% or the beginning of the trace will be lost)
5) "Save" the trace and attach the generated trace.json.gz file to this bug :)
It just happened again. This time was unusual because it triggered on the Netflix homepage, even though there was no audio on that page. Somehow, something on the Netflix page was interfering with audio streaming.

Anyway, I followed the instructions about and here's the trace file.

I mean "add" those categories to the ones that are ticked by default already, i.e. "toplevel", "blink", "cc", "netlog", "v8"


From this alone though we clearly see that it's not the TaskScheduler (it only has a single active thread as there isn't enough work posted to it), there are 6 unnamed threads (base::WorkerPool?) however being flooded with OnMoreDataConverter::OnMoreData() work.

+cychiang if this is only happening on CrOS. I think we have another thread showing some chromebooks are crossing > 1024 open files which puts back on a slow path for audio synchronization and can end up hanging the CrAS system unduly.

There are some logs that will be helpful to find the cause of this issue.

When you reproduce the issue, could you please

1. File feedback by alt+shift+i, and mention 713972 in the feedback log so we can easily search it.

2. Open chrome://media-internals
  (a) In Players tab, click save log and attach the log to this issue.
  (b) In Audio tab, check whether there are multiple output controllers and output streams. There should be one output controller and one output stream for a tab playing audio. If you click the stream button, you can see the status of the stream. Normally it should be in "started" state.

3. Open chrome://system
   It will take about 30 seconds to load.
   Then, search for audio_diagnostics item and click "Expand".
   This is CRAS log.
   It will show "Num active streams", and below that it will show the config of each streams. We can see whether the number of output streams is expected.

I saw there were some tabs playing youtube and some others using Google Play music.
Could you please explain what were the expected behavior, and what did you saw instead?

As I understand, the youtube video at https://www.dailymoth.com/single-post/2017/05/16/The-Daily-Moth-5-16-17 is muted as the news host was using sign language. Chrome still creates audio player for it and plays zeros to CRAS.

So there was a youtube playing at first, and then two Play music tabs.
Youtube at 4216 and Play music at 4539 were paused, not sure why.

I did a short experiment as follows:
I opened the video at https://www.dailymoth.com/single-post/2017/05/16/The-Daily-Moth-5-16-17
Clicked the video to play, and then clicked again to pause it.
The event shown in media-internals was changed from "PLAY" to "PAUSE"
After several seconds, the pipeline_state was changed from "kPlaying" to "kSuspended".
So this suggests that in the attached media-internals.txt, 4216 and 4539 players were paused several seconds ago.
The problem is what caused it to be paused.
I am not sure how to figure this out from media-internal logs, maybe Dale has better idea on it.


On the other hand, in the attached system log, CRAS shows error:
2017-05-17T06:53:37.316636-07:00 ERR cras_server[1840]: fetch err: -32 for 630000
This means client has unexpectedly closed the read end of fd so CRAS got an EPIPE error.
That happened 7 minutes before capturing the feedback log, so I am not sure if this is related.

From audio_diagnostics log in the attached system log, CRAS was playing two streams:

One in 44100 rate and the other in 48000 rate.
Both stream were played fine.
This corresponds to players at 4216 and 4539.
Youtube was using 48000, while play music was using 44100.
The fact that they were paused means Chrome still plays zeros to CRAS.

At last, you saw one output stream under media-internals. This conflict the fact that there were two players being paused in media-internals.txt. I think this might because by the time you change to audio tab in media-internals, one of the players was changed from kStarting to kSuspended, and thus the stream disappeared from the audio tab.


In sum, I think the key is to find out what caused the players to be paused.

Yes, the issue is the mysterious pauses. When the bug triggers, any attempt to play audio or video will cause existing audio/video to be paused. 

Anyway, it just happened to me a again. I also once again ran into the presumably unrelated issue of the cursor being stuck in the middle of the screen after rebooting. (Rebooting twice fixes the cursor issue)

Can you try disabling any extensions you have and go into chrome://flags and hit the reset at the top? All the logs above indicate that something is pausing the videos.
(It just happened again)

I already tried resetting flags before, but it didn't make any difference, and I changed it back since it's hard to live without the ability to mute tabs. As for extensions, I went ahead and disabled every extension other than Google Play Music, and I'll see whether it happens again. There's no point in disabling Play, because that's the main way I can see when the bug happens.

Reassigning to someone from CrOS audio team since we can't reproduce on any of the desktop platforms.
It just happened again, even though I disabled every extension besides Google Play Music. I also submitted another feedback report.

I'm going to go ahead and reenable my adblock extension, because it doesn't seem to make any difference as far as this bug goes and browsing the web without it is unpleasant.
By the way, the issue is still happening regularly. I just stopped bothering to report it each time.

Since I haven't seen it asked: does the issue continue to occur when you're logged into a different account on the same device?

If you have access to any other Chromebooks, do you see it there as well?
Unfortunately, I don't have access to any other chromebooks. I only have one account, so I haven't tried a different account.
Since my Chromebook updated to 59.0.3071.134 a couple days ago, the problem has yet to reoccur. I'll post an update if it does happen again but it seems likely that the bug was fixed recently, whatever it was.
