"Open link as" contextual menu keeps appearing and disappearing |
|||||
Issue descriptionThe "Open Link As... <profile>" contextual menu is periodically disappearing from my desktop Chrome. Is it due to some sort of experiment going on, or is there a bug that's keeping it from appearing? FWIW, the ability to easily open links across profiles is a huge time saver for me. Copying and pasting URLs is a tedious and error-prone process.

This was bugging me for months, until I realized that I need to have a window open for a different profile in order to see the "Open link as" menu option.
Specifically, I have three named profiles, "Google", "Chromium" and "Lambros".
If I only have a window open for "Google" profile, I never see the option to "Open link as".
But if I create a new window under the "Chromium" profile (so I have two windows: "Google" and "Chromium"), I do see the option (in the "Google" window). And it offers me both "Chromium" and "Lambros" as options, even though I don't have any windows already open for "Lambros", only for "Chromium".
My expectation for this feature is that all other profiles ("Lambros", "Chromium") are always available as targets for opening a link, regardless of what other browser windows are open.

My expectations are the same as yours Landros. I found the code in question, and it looks like it's pretty explicit about the menu item requiring |multiple_profiles_open_| before it's shown, so it's unclear whether this behavior is WAI. Adding jochen@, who might be able to speak to that.

Eli, is this behavior WAI?

I modified the code and now it behaves how *I* expect it to. :) https://chromium-review.googlesource.com/c/611869/

+Alex FYI This was heavily debated when we originally rolled this feature out. tl;dr the CTR was better only showing it when there was at least one other active profile open, so that's the behavior we settled upon. Longer story: always showing the menu item has a downside as well. For those users who use profiles as a way to separate browsing data between multiple people, it's completely unnecessary and adds additional clutter to the context menu. The thought is that most users who use multiple-profiles-per-person will have a window open for each of their profiles. There is a long UI review thread with the details and data cited here: https://groups.google.com/a/google.com/forum/#!searchin/chrome-ui-review/open$20link$20as$20context%7Csort:relevance/chrome-ui-review/-oXDFvzS2-I/nwMl418dVK8J

(To be clear: this is currently WAI, please don't change it) |
