Screen clicks with daydream remote don't always work

Project Member Reported by dbbrooks@chromium.org, Apr 19 2017

Issue description

Chrome Version: 58.0.3029.82
Device: Pixel XL
VR Services: 1.4.151195927

What steps will reproduce the problem?
(1) Set daydream as default headset
(2) go to https://webvr.info/samples/03-vr-presentation.html
(3) Enter VR mode
(4) Press top button on daydream controller

What is the expected result? Background should change color

What happens instead? nothing

This doesn't repro every time. After restarting Chrome the issue went away. But it seems to have occurred right after installing Chrome on different devices, multiple times.

I saw this a few times as well, but after upgrading VR Services to 1.5 I haven't seen it again (could just be luck).
I still see this with 1.5 VR services

I wonder if that demo is using the simulated click or Gamepad API. The former is hacky, and the latter may be prone to misses given the polling nature.
I believe it's using the simulated click - AFAIK, the only sample that should use the Gamepad API is the VR Controllers one.
Correct. The background color change in all the samples is using the simulated click. Only the VR Controllers sample uses the Gamepad API directly.
I still see this with 1.6.156467194 vr services and 59.0.3071.81 on the Pixel XL. It's very easy to repro.

klausw: Does this seem possible with the simulated click implementation?
Note that I haven't been able to repro this in a while.

I haven't seen this in a while either. Should we just close?
