Update: Audio player is app still running if close lid then open during playing from external storage. Google Play Music closed without warning if close lid then open during playing from external storage. Chrome OS version: R64-10172.0.0

This happens because disks are unmounted once and then remounted when the system is suspended and back. Image viewer could be changed to handle this situation better.
