About Chrome OS Page: Can't grab quickly grab Chrome/ChromeOS/ARC Version for bugs

Project Member Reported by dhadd...@chromium.org, Apr 13 2017

Issue description

Kevin / 9455.0.0 / 59.0.3068.1

When filing bugs the test team usually includes Chrome/ChromeOS/ARC version at the top.

This could be easily grabbed from the old settings page. Not so with the new MD settings.

You can't see Chrome and ChromeOS version on one screen.
Firmware version and Channel are between the ChromeOS version and ARC version

@bettes any suggestions how we could make this easier? Maybe just a "Copy version info" button?

In the meantime, chrome://version is a great place for copying.

Since chrome://version provides the necessary information, I'm going to move this to M-60 when we will hopefully be working on cleaning up the About page in general.

bettes@ - Once this has received UX consideration feel free to assign this to me.

Any updates here? I heard from yet another person today confused by Chrome vs. Chrome OS version from this page. Our teams know to look at chrome://version, but the average bug filer does not.
Sorry I don't have the best context on this. Is this only for the ctrl + shift + i feedback form?

Also dumb questions, why aren't we attaching arc and Cros version to every submitted bug via the system?
Please consider these CBC support needs in addition to the bug submittal enhancements.

Before bugs get filed, we usually have to talk users through the chrome://version procedure when troubleshooting issues on Chromebook Central.

Many users have no idea what their model number is, so the board name allows us to help figure it out for them. The "About Chrome OS" page provides the ChromeOS version and channel. But the user then needs to go to "Detailed build information" for the rest of the info. Copy/paste of those pages are awkward at best.

A "Copy" button that would grab all the pertinent info would be perfect. Or, format the display so that the info is easily copied. Understand that we are often dealing with novice users who struggle for even simple tasks like copy/paste.

For your reference and context, here is the canned response that I use when asking users for detailed info. Any enhancements that would simplify this info gathering would be greatly appreciated.

An indication of a managed device/account status (not privacy restricted data!), developer mode, or any other requested data would certainly be helpful:

-----------------------

Please provide all of the following information so we can help you further:

What have you already done to try to fix the problem? (such as Reboot, Browser reset. Powerwash, Recovery, tried Guest mode, tried other user profiles?)

Detailed description of what you are experiencing: (Please describe exactly what you are seeing. Are you seeing any error messages? What were you doing before this issue came up? What are the steps to reproduce the problem? Any other details you think might be important. Screenshots will help us understand what you are seeing!)

Chrome OS Version (Type chrome://version in your browser window's address bar. Copy and paste the first five lines in the results, they start with Google Chrome, Revision, Platform, Firmware Version, and ARC (if present)):

Chromebook Model Number (Look at the label on the bottom if you aren't sure. There are many different Chromebook models with similar names - only the actual model number provides the detail we need):

Managed Device/Account (Type chrome://policy into your address bar, hit enter, and then copy everything you see and paste it in your reply)

Are you in Developer mode? (Are you, or have you, changed into Developer Mode, or have you experimented with Linux? If so explain in detail - it really matters. If you want help, you will have to do a full Recovery before we will help you further)

Have you changed anything on the chrome://flags/ page? (If you did, use the "Reset all to default" button on that page and restart if you want further help.)

Have you changed anything in the Accessibility area of Settings? (Go to chrome://settings/manageAccessibility and disable anything that is currently turned on. See if that solves your problem.)

Summary: About Chrome OS Page: Can't grab quickly grab Chrome/ChromeOS/ARC Version for bugs (was: Can't grab quickly grab Chrome/ChromeOS/ARC Version for bugs)
re #10: this bug is the "About Chrome OS" page (chrome://settings/help) and what it displays.

The pre-MD design had more info shown. The MD page hides most info behind a click. Only the Chrome version + channel + board is displayed, not the Chrome OS version. That's not great because the Chrome number is not unique - multiple Chrome OS versions can have the same Chrome (e.g. check out Canary right now!).

Feedback reports (ctrl + shift + i) do include all that info, so this page doesn't affect that. The problem is when people file crbug bugs or try and discuss their issue with anyone, as Jim points out.

chrome://version has this info too, but it's not always what our users look up.
Thanks for the details.

See the proposal attached, hopefully this will help this issue. I've added a "COPY BUILD INFORMATION" button next to the "more" arrow button.

If this works feel free to re-assign for implementation.

Should probably include a UX person in the discussion.

Having said that, the rationale of putting the additional information behind a subpage is to keep the top-level About page as light and elegant as possible. Adding the new button makes the "Detailed build information" row cluttered IMO, and the new button seems as prominent as "CHECK FOR UPDATES" which is much more important than "COPY BUILD INFORMATION".

chrome://setings/help is primarily user visible page (it's where users go to update their Chrome version), not a developer page. chrome://version on the other hand, already displays that info in a copy-able fashion and is more developer-oriented.

My suggestion is to either move the "Copy" button within the subpage, or instruct users/developers who seek additional build info copying to chrome://version (via Google product forums or wherever those reports surface).
Owner: tbuckley@google.com
Fair enough, I thought it needed to be more prominent. Feel free to add it to any row in the sub-section. I think doing this AND instructing users better how to access it would definitely be a plus.

@tbuckley. Once you guys settle on an option, can you bring it to UI-review? Thanks.
Update - users are frequently pasting the "detailed" screen info when asking for help in CBC. We then have to ask them for the Chrome version info.

Please try to find a way to display all of this info in one page that does not require novice users to type chrome://version and then copy/paste. This is well beyond the ability of many users.

(Bulk Edit) Adding the new conops Chrome OS hotlist to all open issues with the "#CBC-RS/TC-watchlist" tag, our former tracking tag.
I've spoken with our Top Contributors who respond to users on our Community Forums. This change would likely also be useful for OEM & Pixelbook Agents who provide 1:1 help over phone, chat, and email.

We're okay with having the "Copy" button on the Detailed build information subpage, but here's the info we'd like to have there:

- Google Chrome Version (should be included on Detailed build info page as well)
- Platform (can we add this to the 'About Chrome OS' overview page as well so that the version & platform are together, as they tend to be the most critical?)
- Firmware Version
- Channel
- Chrome OS ARC Status (if enabled)
- ARC Version
- Enterprise Enrolled (managed vs. not managed)
- Boot mode (normal vs. dev)

Users should be able to click "copy" and then paste the above info into Forum posting, chat, or email.
