This is https://github.com/whatwg/html/issues/668. It has resistance from Gecko on the basis that it only appears in browser-sniffing code paths, but I think that's not enough to hold it back if we want to spec it.

OK, next step for this issue, if prioritized, would be to look through https://github.com/whatwg/html/issues/668#issuecomment-255063455 and propose what exactly the spec should say. If it would be a modest amount of code on top of innerText, then that sounds good. Getting Gecko on board is important though, because they're the ones who would have to implement to get from 3/4 to 4/4 engines.

This issue has been Available for over a year. If it's no longer important or seems unlikely to be fixed, please consider closing it out. If it is important, please re-triage the issue.
