Unable to download attachments from gmail

Project Member Reported by srikanthg@chromium.org, Apr 7 2017

Issue description

App Version: 58.0.3029.64 beta
iOS Version: 10.3, 10.2
Device: iPhone7, iPad pro
URL: mail.google.com

Precondition: Have a testaccount that has any downloadable attachments in gmail

Steps to reproduce:
  1. Launch Google Chrome
  2. Navigate to mail.google.com and sign in with any account
  3. Open the email that contains downloadable attachments
  4. Download the attachment

Observed results: Sometimes, a new tab opened with about:blank and a progress bar visible with 100% progress forever.
OR, new tab again redirects back to mail.google.com

Expected results: Download manager should be displayed.

Note: WKWebView is not allowing to tap links, so not able to reproduce there.
Firefox doesn't support downloads yet, Working fine Safari.
If you clear browsing data and freshly signin, then Download manager is sometimes displayed, but then if the app is killed and restarted, the problem appears again.

This is reproduced in M57 as well.

Number of times you were able to reproduce: 5/5
Bug reproducible after clean install: Yes
Bug reproducible after clearing cache and cookies: Yes
Bug reproducible on Chrome Mobile on Android: NA
Bug reproducible on Safari/Firefox: Firefox: Not supported, Safari: NO
Bug reproducible on current stable build (App Version, iOS Version): M57 Yes
Bug reproducible on the current beta channel build (App Version, iOS Version): M58 Yes

Do you know if this was broken ever since we moved to WKWebView?

Comment 3 Deleted

Atleast it is working on very first try with very first installations. Once I restart chrome, it stoped working. Attached is the video where I can see the download manager working for the same test account and same files. It looks like working case is a bit hard to reproduce than non-working case!

What I mean to say is, was it broken in M57 or M56?
Reproduced in M56 also.

Looked at this one a bit more.

Not clear to me that the failure is that there is no cookie available. I would expect the failure to occur during the download, but here, the download manager is never triggered.

I did some breakpoint investigation in web controller, and found that the initial page is HTML. It then goes through a variety of redirects/loads/authentication challenges (which typically fail), before either terminating the load or redirecting back to the gmail mail screen.

This case is one to consider for the new download manager, as decidePolicyForNavigationResponse is never called for the redirected loads which may include the attachment.

Marking as available, since not high priority.

Issue is still reproducible. Tapping on attachment in gmail, opens up a new tab with about:blank instead of displaying download manager.

There are probably more bugs in this area than just cookie issue. Subhashini, could you please try enabling #new-file-download and retesting again.
@eugene,

I tried enabling #new-file-download flag, it seems to be working fine only once - redirects to download manager later on, it opens up new tab again redirects back to mail.gmail.com

Video from comment #14 looks like a bug in Gmail. GMail does the redirect.

Should this bug be RBS for M66? As per the new feature WKHTTPCookieStore (http://crbug/813178) going out in M66 and the launch bug mentions that authenticated downloads should be working.

Is this bug reproducible with Safari User Agent?
Yes
Even signed in downloads from other sites like GoogleDrive (http://crbug/417003), Dropbox.com not working. Are these downloads expected tobe working with this feature enabled on iOS11?
Yes, we expect that download from drop box works in M66. Could you please try with M67 and new download manager?
Downloads are working fine in M67 with the new Download manager.
(Tested on gmail, dropbox, google drive)

I understand that with the new download manager, this is not related to cookies any more. I'll be fixing it anyway But it's actually not going to be used for this bug.
I'll assign this to eugene as it's pending download manager launch.

Not an RBS. This is not a regression and will be fixed in New Download Manager.
