Probably a dupe of Issue 613226, but we need to take a look at why partial screenshot stopped working on 57.0.2987.137.

I can take a partial screen shot on elm (Chrome 59.0.3068.0/Platform 9439.0.0-17.04.07). I will look the crash report in more detail.

It also works on device LINK with Chrome 58.0.2991.0, Platform 9197.0.0-17.01.18.

If it is possible, could you please update ChromeOS and try again? Current stable version for LINK is Chrome: 57.0.2987.146/Platform: 9202.64.0 on 2017-04-05 11:56. I am installing this version to see if we have this problem.

There is a way we can do more analysis. Could you please do the following to file a feedback report right after one crash? 1. First reproduce the crash. 2. "ALT + SHIFT + i" to open the feedback report window. 3. Filled in this bug number: http://crbug.com/708444 . 4. Click/Check "Send system information and metrics. 5. Click "Send".

I do not find any thing interesting in the log file. I am not sure this is related, but can you try removing the Extension [Nimbus Screenshot & Screen Video Recorder|Securly for Chromebooks]. There might be some conflict with the extension. Is the extension installed in all the ChromeBooks you tested?
,
Apr 12 2017
It works fine when I installed the extension: Nimbus Screenshot & Screen Video Recorder
,
Apr 12 2017
Hi, No - thats the workaround - you install it to take a partial screenshot. Does not work with or without it. Does not work in guest mode or with a fresh user with no extensions. This stopped working in the middle of the day about a week ago - was working and then has failed to do so. On an Acer CB13 today it actually crashed Chrome (did the normal bug report). Also failed to work on a brand new Asus C213N which I was given to review. I can only think this is location related as it works in other parts of the world. Roger R D Nixon, Director of ICT Wheatley Park School, Holton, Oxford OX33 1QH | Telephone: 01865 872441| Direct: 07722868036

So the Nimbus Screenshot app works, but the native ChromeBook app "CTRL + SHIFT + SWITCH" does not work? In the log file you upload, I should see crash back trace. But I did not find it. What is your bug report id for Acer CB13? I can have a look.
,
Apr 12 2017
"So the Nimbus Screenshot app works, but the native ChromeBook app "CTRL + SHIFT + SWITCH" does not work" - Correct - well most of the time - Nimbus can be a bit glitchy - but does work most of the time. When it does not - nothing happens when you try to take a partial screenshot. "CTRL + SHIFT + SWITCH" never works now and either crashes chrome (on the CB13) or results in a full screenshot (intel based devices) - the crosshair appears but you cannot select an area. Sorry - the CB13 one I did at lunchtime today at work quickly. Has my email address on it - rdnixon@wheatleypark.org if thats any help. Normally, when the partial screen shot triggered, the screen should be masked by gray layer and when you select the area, the area selected become normal. I do not see it from the video.
,
Apr 12 2017
Yes - that's the point - you drag the cross hair and you cannot do anything - you just get a full screenshot. You cannot get the mask over the area you are trying to select.

Here is from the syslog from the report: "Crash trying to take a partial screen shot". Is this the reason for the crash: "pcm_avail returned frames larger than buf_size: NVIDIA Tegra Venice2: :1,0: 8200 > 8192 for 1 times"? I wonder if you take full screen shot "CTRL + SWITCH", will it crash on the same device? If yes, the crash may be different issue than you can not use "partial screen shot". 2017-04-12T11:27:59.740269+01:00 ERR cras_server[1843]: No chmap queried! 2017-04-12T11:28:00.704298+01:00 ERR cras_server[1843]: pcm_avail returned frames larger than buf_size: NVIDIA Tegra Venice2: :1,0: 8200 > 8192 for 1 times 2017-04-12T11:28:01.426874+01:00 WARNING crash_reporter[6945]: Received crash notification for chrome[1251] user 1000 (called directly) 2017-04-12T11:28:01.903213+01:00 WARNING crash_reporter[6967]: [user] Received crash notification for chrome[1251] sig 11, user 1000 (ignoring call by kernel - chrome crash; waiting for chrome to call us directly) 2017-04-12T11:28:02.399258+01:00 ERR cras_server[1843]: fetch err: -32 for 0 2017-04-12T11:28:02.402780+01:00 INFO session_manager[1091]: [INFO:child_exit_handler.cc(77)] Handling 1251 exit. 2017-04-12T11:28:02.402963+01:00 ERR session_manager[1091]: [ERROR:child_exit_handler.cc(85)] Exited with signal 11 2017-04-12T11:28:02.403134+01:00 INFO session_manager[1091]: [INFO:session_manager_service.cc(301)] Exiting process is chrome. 2017-04-12T11:28:02.403274+01:00 INFO session_manager[1091]: [INFO:browser_job.cc(149)] Terminating process group: Ensuring browser processes are gone. 2017-04-12T11:28:02.403425+01:00 INFO session_manager[1091]: [INFO:system_utils_impl.cc(110)] Sending 9 to -1251 as 1000

I can use the Nimbus to take "partial" screen shot. Could you please try one more thing for me, use an external keyboard, to see if you can take partial screen shot?
,
Apr 13 2017
The reason I asked because there was some keyboard issue with other type of Chromebook. The behaviors are not same though.
,
Apr 13 2017
Hi, I've tried a PC keyboard with my Pixel and the same thing happens - takes a full screenshot not partial. The Tegra Acer is a at work - so I'll try when I'm back in (of until after Easter now) - but you could do a full screenshot - that keyboard combo works fine. I did try switching to a US keyboard - but that does not seem to make any difference. Thanks for the reply. I am also looking for any code change between Chrome/57.0.2987.137 and previous stable one Chrome/57.0.2987.123, nothing obvious related to screenshot. There is a new version Chrome/57.0.2987.146 for LINK pushed on 2017-04-05. I am guessing it does not fix the issue for you.

I do not see any similar report, which is weird. There is one similar, but I think it is related to keyboard: https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=709548 https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=701643 There are two more things we can try: 1. try a US keyboard. 2. For the a brand new Asus C213N, did you login with old account? Could you please create a brand new user account and login? Because all the apps/extensions will be automatically synced when you use old account to login. But you do mentioned that "Guest" login has the same issue, which cannot be explained.
,
Apr 14 2017
Hi, Tried US and a selection of other languages - makes no difference. This happens independently of any account - so the same thing happens in guest mode (tried on Pixel, Acer C720 and Toshiba 2). Have changed the language to US and a variety of other in guest mode - no difference. I've tried with an account with zero extensions where they are not allowed to add any. Advising our users to use Nimbus for now. Roger R D Nixon, Director of ICT Wheatley Park School, Holton, Oxford OX33 1QH | Telephone: 01865 872441| Direct: 07722868036

Thanks for being patient with us. A problem is that we can not reproduce the bug here. I cannot reproduce the bug on LINK, ELM, KEVIN on different versions M56, M57, M58 and M59. If we can reproduce the bug, then we can find out what the root cause is.

OK - no worries - Nimbus appears to be working OK and is a good alternative. Weird how its not working over here.
