I tried the steps you mentioned, it launched new instance of browser but not the google page. In system settings I found that for 'Web' default application is set as 'New tab- Google Chrome', could this be a problem? I tried changing the default browser to some other browser then back to Google chrome than also it is displayed as 'New tab-Google Chrome' in default applications PFA screenshots.

The fix mentioned in https://askubuntu.com/questions/499200/xdg-open-opens-chrome-but-does-not-load-the-url It's because the .desktop file that chrome installs in your home (in ~/.local/share/applications) is bad. Either add a %U to the end of the Exec= line, like so: Exec=/opt/google/chrome/chrome %U or remove it and let your system pick up the one chrome itself ships in /usr/share. has solved the problem for me. ~Thanks |
