Mysterious "Office Editing for Docs, Sheets and Slides" extension icon, but nothing listed in Extensions |
||||||||||||||||||||||
Issue descriptionChrome Version: 59.0.3054.0 dev OS: ChromeOS Minnie What steps will reproduce the problem? (1) Sign-in. (2) Open the toolbar action overflow area (the three-dot menu). (3) Find the icon for Office Editing for Docs, Sheets and Slides, and hover over it. (4) Open chrome://extensions. What is the expected result? Expect that it is possible to un-install the Office Editing for Docs, Sheets and Slides extension, or that it is not there. Expect that hovering over it provides a description. Instead, the tooltip looks like an i18n placeholder tag, starting __MSG__. Expect that it is listed under chrome://extensions. It is not listed, however; it's not clear how the icon is being generated. Visiting the Offline Editing.. extension in the Chrome Web Store, the Web Store site indicates that it is not installed, and offers to install it. This affects both of the accounts I have signed-in on this device.

That's very strange. First step is to check out what the settings are for that extension in preferences. If you have a version of chrome after 59.0.3047.0, you should be able to go to chrome://prefs-internals and ctrl+f for the extension id. Otherwise, we'll have to go a more roundabout way. If you can find the prefs entry for it, we can see a bit about what it is, and, hopefully, where it came from. If you can scrub it for any PII and paste the json blob here, that'd be helpful. (Feel free to ping/email for more details on this.)

As discussed off-bug, AIs here are: 1. Remove the action icon patch from the component extension version of Office Editing. 2. Fix the localisation of the icon tool-tip / extension name. 3. Follow-up on visibility of changes to the component extension to the CrOS release managers. kuscher: Can you re-assign as appropriate? Is Ha the right owned for this?

[Auto-generated comment by a script] We noticed that this issue is targeted for M-59; it appears the fix may have landed after branch point, meaning a merge might be required. Please confirm if a merge is required here - if so add Merge-Request-59 label, otherwise remove Merge-TBD label. Thanks.

rkc@ can someone on your team do the merge to 59?

This was tricky to merge. Apparently for a DEPS change, we can't drover into the branch, it needs to be a new CL. Grace helped me with the merge: https://chromereviews.googleplex.com/586727013/ Thank you Grace!
