Clicking an intent:// link with target="_blank" and rel="noopener" does not work as expected

Issue description
Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Click a link like the following:
<a href="intent://open?link_click_id=309383410853042683#Intent;scheme=Zipr;package=com.ziprecruiter.android.release;S.market_referrer=link_click_id-309383410853042683;end" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Install the app</a>
2. Observe the browser opens a blank page and nothing happens
or
1. Click a link like the following:
<a href="https://ziprecruiter.app.link/ERwqKRL3px" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Install the app</a> (this is a branch.io link which redirects to the above intent:// link)
2. Observe an ERR_UNKNOWN_URL_SCHEME message is shown
What is the expected behavior?
The app page should open in the Google Play store
What went wrong?
In the case of a direct intent:// link, a blank page is shown. In the case of a link which redirects to an intent:// link, a strange error is shown.

Does this work in other browsers? Yes

@phistuck RE: "Does this work in other browsers? Yes" We tested this in Firefox and the links seem to open up the play store. I'll admit I'm not an Android guy so I may be missing something.

Sorry, I think you might be right! https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=851693 I have not followed the entire discussion, but they seem to be talking about intent:// there, so I guess it is supported. This is very surprising.

I am the one who did the testing on Chrome Android, and also Firefox Android. If you want further confirmation and you have access to an Android device it is easy to check for yourself with the links provided above.

This seems to be fixed already. I verified that it doesn't work on 56.0.2924.87, but behaves properly on 58.0.3029.83. |
