Issue descriptionUserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_10_5) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/56.0.2924.87 Safari/537.36 OPR/43.0.2442.1165 Steps to reproduce the problem: 1. Open a teb 2. Notice the close tab button in on the right What is the expected behavior? With an ergonomic approach, the close tab button should be on the same side as the OS, therefore on the left. What went wrong? The close tab button is on the right. It should be at least configurable or by default on the left like every close button in the OS. In addition some tools (like Total Finder) relies on Chromium tabs and users complain as well. Did this work before? N/A Chrome version: 56.0.2924.87 Channel: n/a OS Version: OS X 10.10.5 Flash Version: Shockwave Flash 25.0 r0 Already reported but unfortunately ignored in Issue 24409 . Since that time some contributors may improved their knowledge in UX. That's why I re-open this issue.

Thanks for referencing the old bug here! I've edited the bug description so it turns into a link. CC'ing shrike@ - you might be the right person for this?

Marking this as Untriaged as Feature request and for more discussion on this.

I agree that as a Mac user, the close box on the right is wrong. However, I also agree with https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=12035#c103, which discusses the problems with changing its position. Looping in ainslie@ for a look, but I suspect this should/will be duped in to Issue 12035 .

Yah. That sounds right to me too.

I suggest you to have a look at the recent versions of Opera which have very well implemented the solution 2 of https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=12035#c103 There is no real issue with this way. For those who could think that it could make it non-obvious to know how to close a tab, it's exaggerated. In practice all mac users are absolutely able to know how to close it. In addition, even if you take the most stupid new user, he won't have to guess it as he will know it as soon as he will need to switch between 2 tabs for example. In all cases this detail is less important than breaking the Mac UX consistency. All close buttons are on the left in the Mac UX.

Yup. That's an elegant solution for experts and folks using a mouse/trackpad. As a general usability principle, we try to avoid using hover as way to expose core functionality because it's not as friendly to non-experts. And on the hardware front, we also need to plan touch-enabled screens (ex: Surface Pro, ChromeBook Pro, etc.) where hover isn't reliably available.

I think it's important not to confuse different contexts. Sorry if I have not been clear enough. I am talking about the UX in OS X, therefore Chromium for OS X. In OS X the use of a mouse/trackpad is mandatory. Of course of the way on mobile devices has be to be different but it's not the subject. In our case the UX consistency should not be broken for this detail. As a last resort, if it's not offered by default, this should be at least configurable via an option.

I noticed this issue has been merged with a "won't fix" one. So, do the OS X users have to understand you won't let them have it their way? If you absolutely don't want the close tab button on the left by default, is there a good reason not to offer it as an option? |
