This may help in identifying the problem:

There appears to be a problem with Chrome on Mac where images are either not cached properly, or are not retrieved from cache properly.
I think this bug should be considered confirmed. I'm not the only one seeing this issue...
Status: Untriaged
I'm experiencing this problem intermittently (Mac only) when browsing "back" to a page that contains images loaded using the backround-image CSS attribute. It may be related to this WebKit bug:
I am encountering this bug on MAC OS X Lion 10.7.2. (11C74) on Chrome 17.0.963.46 -- I have not been able to duplicate this error anywhere else. I have tried Firefox and Safari on Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 and on Windows 7 Chrome, Safari and Mac. The only place I can produce this issue is on Mac and Chrome combination. I realize this is a fairly old issue but I am experiencing it -- and only intermittently. Thanks!
I am also encountering this on Lion 10.7.3 with Chrome 17.0.963.46, intermittently with CSS background images
Yes, definetly a problem on the mac. Chrome 17 up to the Chromium 19. Background-images are not loaded everytime.

Seeing this on 17.0.963.46 for Mac, but I did not notice it with Windows version. You can easily replicate it, with a timer to change the display from block to none and back.

Had to change a site from using Display to Visibility to fix in the mean time.

I notice, when I deactived the speeddial2 extension.... it works fine!
No speeddial2 extension on my chrome, still experiencing the problem
Ok, still the same error, even without speeddial! CRAP! THIS IS ANNOYING GOOGLE. DO SOMETHING!
I also started having the same issue right after Chrome automatically updated to its last version (17.0.963.46) on my Mac OSX. Every other browser is working fine!!
My sites navigation uses anchors and some of the background images don't appear after revisiting a page. This bug only affects some of the background images, I couldn't fine a pattern to replicate it.

This is really annoying, specially when you've been working like crazy too lunch this site and BAM, it breaks at the last moment!!!!

We're experiencing the same thing:

We have certain background-images that intermittently show, you can't get a consistent pattern of it. We've noticed this only for Chrome on the Mac. Our builds include 17.0.963.46 and 17.0.963.56. Our version of OS is Mac OS 10.6.8. Our background-images, that are having the problem, exist on a flyout menu that is completed controlled via css (the flyout menu does not use js). We use background-images in many locations for the rest of the site and have had no issues with them, just one image in 4 flyout menus.
