Microphone sometimes doesn't work.

Project Member Reported by kspitz@google.com, Mar 14 2017

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_12_3) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/56.0.2924.87 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce the problem:
I don't know how to repro, but I know that restarting Chrome (with no changes) fixed it.

Here's what happened:
 * Attempted to make a call with Google Hangouts. The other person couldn't hear me (but could see my video, and I could see/hear them)
 * Opened (OSX) system preferences -> sound and ensured internal mic was selected, and that it was registering me talking (it was)
 * Switched Hangouts from "default" to "internal microphone" input
 * Tried a "mic test" website; gave it permission to access microphone, but it still registered no sound
 * Restarted Chrome, rejoined the Hangouts video call - and my microphone worked

I would say that over 50% of the time I try to use Hangouts over the last few months (at least), the microphone doesn't work. Usually I just switch to a different device.

What is the expected behavior?
Microphone reliably works.

What went wrong?
Microphone didn't work.

Did this work before? N/A

Sounds a bit like issue 549021 . Could you try restarting coreaudiod (by running 'sudo killall coreaudiod') the next time you have this issue to see if that fixes it without you restarting chrome?
Agree, most likely a dupe of issue 549021 . I am surprised about the frequency of events though. But as is stated in #2, next time it happens, open a terminal and do 'sudo killall coreaudiod' and see if that helps.
