Ads on ebay DoS the browser process and make chrome unusable |
||||||||||
Issue descriptionChrome: 57.0.2987.88 OS: OSX just go on ebay.co.uk and do some searches. After a while the entire browser (note, the browser, not just the tabs) becomes unusably slow (scrolling < 1 fps), until I close the ebay tabs. This has happened for a long while (1 month or so) and finally today I managed to get a trace. I grabbed a trace and the main thread of browser process is 100% busy with OnDidCommitProvisionalLoad events from doubleclick. There are two things going wrong here: 1. the ads on ebay are so bad that make the site (together with the rest of the browser) unusable. 2. A renderer should not be able to cause the entire browser to become unusable.

Renderers can DOS the browser. This is unfortunate, but a known problem. There might exist some far-away theoretical future where we have some type of global resource coordinator that allows us to throttle renderers that are using too many resources, but until then....nada.

erikchen, is there a global resource coordinator bug we can block this on? I hope that future isn't more than a year away. WontFix seems like the wrong resolution to something that's a real bug that's in our power to fix. Also, for this bug in particular, that the ads are so misbehaving might be something we can address more directly. Speaking of which, I wasn't able to reproduce this on ChromeOS. Primiano, assigning to you to clarify a few things, feel free to assign back to me after. 1. Are there more specific repro steps or is it just going to the home page? 2. Does this happen for you in incognito? If not, it might be extension related as in issue 698556 (which only repros on Mac for me). 3. Is the browser UI itself hosed? Like, are you unable to switch between tabs using the mouse?

> 1. Are there more specific repro steps or is it just going to the home page? I will try to get some more realistic steps. Doesn't seem to happen with my corp laptop even if I use my personal profile (I guess due to the IP address geolocation). Which means that even if I repro I'll have to use WPR or something in order to allow other people to see the issue (might be worth it, considering that this is a rather popular site). > 2. Does this happen for you in incognito? Hmm I forgot, will check again. > 3. Is the browser UI itself hosed? Like, are you unable to switch between tabs using the mouse? Correct, at least *some* browser-related UI actions took time. For instance: Switching between tabs took several seconds. Even just closing the tab itself took some 5-10 seconds (from when I clicked "X" to when the tab disappeared)

Obviously any later attempt to repro this failed miserably. I guess ebay just noticed and removed the bad ad that was causing this. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Keeping this open just to track the general problem of DoS-ing until a better bug is avilable.

This regression has been open for half a year. It's not very actionable and the regression has been in all Chrome user's hands for months. |
