Does not reproduce on Chrome OS

Steps to reproduce:
1. Enter into tablet mode.
2. Open a new tab, showing the new tab page (NTP).
3. Tap on the search field within the NTP to give it keyboard focus.
4. Enter a single character from the VK.

What happens:
The VK is dismissed.

What should happen instead:
The VK should remain visible.

Note: The issue does not reproduce if the keyboard focus is given directly to the omnibox rather than the textfield in the NTP contents.
