Chrome UI hanging randomly, e.g. when closing a tab; focusing input field, etc. |

Issue description[Filing on behalf of a friend because reCaptcha is locking them out] UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_12_3) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/56.0.2924.87 Safari/537.36 Steps to reproduce the problem: No reliable way to repro. But I've captured some logs when it happens using and saving the tail of the logfile "/Applications/Google\ Chrome.app/Contents/MacOS/Google\ Chrome --enable-logging --v=1" What is the expected behavior? Not hanging... What went wrong? - Hanging for 2-10 seconds (sometimes more). Sometimes happens every few minutes, other times there are no issues for hours. - This happens even when there is plenty of unused memory (e.g. 3gb according to OS X Activity Monitor) - Perhaps related, perhaps another bug — Activity Monitor shows Chrome consuming much more memory than Chromes task manager Did this work before? Yes This was not a problem before I reinstalled mac os x and went from Mountain Lion to Sierra (same google account) Chrome version: 56.0.2924.87 Channel: stable OS Version: OS X 10.12.3 Flash Version: Shockwave Flash 24.0 r0 If I know what to send, I can share logfiles, but there is a lot of private data — perhaps there is a way to automatically scrub that? or I can selectively due it manually.

If you can, it would be helpful to submit a trace. If you're worried about sensitive details, you can upload it to drive and only provide access to limited individuals (for example, google.com or just to me). There's unfortunately not a way to automatically scrub the data, which includes tab titles and URLs but not tab contents. https://www.chromium.org/developers/how-tos/submitting-a-performance-bug

I think I've actually found a way to reproduce the issue and "prevent it" — I was just waiting to see if issue would come back. I had ~20,000 unique bookmarks. When I deleted almost all of them (after exporting of course), Chrome no longer hung. It also conveniently removed an even longer hang on mouseover of the Bookmarks menu item on the 3 dots menu toolbar (which I previously just carefully avoided when possible!).

Aha! Does this happen mostly when you use keyboard shortcuts? macOS recalculates menus (including the entire bookmark tree) under certain circumstances. It does so lazily (when you try to access it, which includes keyboard shortcuts in menus), and used to do so every time you used a shortcut after switching profiles: Issue 429371 .

+shrike in case this ends up being a Mac-specific issue

I noticed it most often when using the keyboard shortcut to close a tab. But I think it's also happened on mouse focus events (e.g. when focusing on a text field). Is there a particular log entry I should be looking for from what I've saved historically?

Re: the original bug report, what does "hang" mean? Spinning cursor? Page unresponsive? I recall a bookmarks issue related to lots of bookmarks but I can't find that bug at the moment. If it happen again, and you're getting the spinning cursor, use the Sample command in Activity Monitor to sample the browser process (best plan is to have Activity Monitor running and Chrome selected in advance).

Hang in this case means "spinning cursor" and "page unresponsive" and sometimes (but not always IIRC) all chrome tabs unresponsive. I can try to reload the 20,000 bookmarks and double check soon.
