Roboto medium font is not respected for Arabic |
|||||||
Issue descriptionRoboto does not have characters for Arabic languages. It seems that the fallback font used in this case does not take care of the style used, i.e. when using medium font, it is displayed as regular font. Using MDCTypography with default font, the Arabic language is displayed correctly. I have attached a screenshot of Roboto and of default font (using medium font in both case). I have opened an issue in MDF: https://github.com/material-foundation/material-roboto-font-loader-ios/issues/12

Our fix should probably be to drop Roboto and use SanFran. Does it behave any better here?

I tried with the default font from MDCTypography. I am not sure of the one it uses. But with this font, as you can see in the first screenshot, the Arabic characters look medium.

https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=694948 was the bug we were using for the infrastructure to do it, but i don't think we ever created a specific bug to switch. Bijou will use SF, but I'm not sure how we're going to stage things. Adding Pete and Khalil to the discussion.
