modesetting disables acceleration

Project Member Reported by justinkl@google.com, Mar 2 2017

Issue description

Chrome Version : 56.0.2924.87

What steps will reproduce the problem?
(1) Force X to use the "modesetting" driver instead of the "intel" driver.
(2) Run Chrome.
(3)

What is the expected result?

chrome://gpu reports "Software only, hardware acceleration unavailable" for all setting.

What happens instead?

chrome://gpu should report "Hardware acceleration available".

Goobuntu will be migrating to using the "modesetting" driver within the year. Chrome must be fixed by then.

Please use labels and text to provide additional information.

For graphics-related bugs, please copy/paste the contents of the about:gpu
page at the end of this report.

This looks like out of scope for TE(In-house team not having the mode settings driver), hence adding the respective label for it to triage further.

Well, it looks like it makes the GPU process crash, probably inside the driver. @justinkl, do you have corresponding crash ids in about:crashes ?

Unsure which ones are related (and to aid work, I've switched back to using the Intel driver), but here are the last 6 on this machine:

Comment 8 by piman@chromium.org, Mar 8 2017

It crashes inside the driver, on the first glClear.

Comment 9 by piman@chromium.org, Mar 16 2017

@justinkl: does it reproduce when disabling the sandbox (--disable-gpu-sandbox)?

@justinkl: Could you please answer the question in Comment 9?
Labels: -Pri-2 Pri-1
Sorry, just saw this.
It does not repro (under either DRI2 or DRI3) with --disable-gpu-sandbox.
Cc: jsc...@chromium.org jorgelo@chromium.org
Ok, I suspect that driver has new behavior (e.g. new syscalls?) that is blocked by the sandbox.
@jschuh, is there a Linux sandbox expert on the security team that can take a look / help debugging this?
What is the modesetting driver?

Also, I don't seem to be able to open those crash reports anymore, is that expected?
@jorgelo I think the crash reports are expired. IIRC they were not that useful for this though, they looked like accessing (writing?) NULL, not an obvious failure on a syscall, which suggested to me that some memory allocation failed or something, and we only see the results later.

Re: modesetting, I found https://linux.die.net/man/4/modesetting but I haven't looked into the details (in particular how it interacts with accelerated graphics drivers in X clients).
If somebody helps me repro, I'm happy to give it a shot.
@justinkl, could you work with Jorge to root cause this? I'm happy to review patches / discuss solutions to fix it.

@jorgelo, thanks for looking at this. Moving it to your radar.
Like I said above, unless someone tells me how to repro on our workstations (or somewhere else) I cannot do anything about this.
Here's a forum thread on enabling the modesetting driver: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=229242

But our workstations don't have intel GPUs, do they?

P3 since this doesn't have a milestone and has been open for >6 months.
I'm sure techstop has some devices with intel GPUs?

TechStop in CAM definitely doesn't have devices with Intel GPUs that they can loan for testing. At the same time, I think I need to admit that I will likely never get to this.
