Google Chrome Helper hangs while navigating a Gerrit page

Reported by electric...@gmail.com, Feb 28 2017

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_12_3) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/56.0.2924.87 Safari/537.36

Example URL:

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Navigate onto Gerrit's side-by-side diff page for any change
2. Scroll the page (if multiple) or navigate using Gerrit's keyboard shortcuts (j & k)
3. Page becomes unresponsive after a seemingly unpredictable series of keystrokes, and the Google Chrome Helper process hangs

What is the expected behavior?
Page displays normally without losing responsiveness

What went wrong?
Opening Activity Monitor one can see the Google Chrome Helper process taking 100% CPU time - the same can be verified with Chrome's own Task Manager. There is no crash as long as I could observe an unresponsive page. Verified the behaviour occurs even in incognito mode, without any plugins enabled. Following the process at http://dev.chromium.org/for-testers/bug-reporting-guidelines led to obtaining the dump file attached.

Does it occur on multiple sites: N/A

Is it a problem with a plugin? No

Did this work before? Yes Chrome version 55 worked flawlessly

Does this work in other browsers? N/A

Chrome version: 56.0.2924.87 Channel: stable
OS Version: OS X 10.12.3
Flash Version: Shockwave Flash 24.0 r0

dmp files are crash reports, but you aren't experiencing a crash but a hang.

Please gather a hang sample for us. To do so:
0) Go to the Gerrit page and hang the helper process
1) Open Activity Monitor
2) Find the 100% CPU-using hung process
3) Go to View > Sample Process
4) Attach the result as a file to this bug report

Thanks!
The sample is attached.

You might consider updating the instructions re: hangs under: http://dev.chromium.org/for-testers/bug-reporting-guidelines/hanging-tabs

Components: Blink>JavaScript>GC Blink>Layout
Symbolized.

This is eating all its time in layout and GC. Tossing to the Blinkers.

Can you give an example of a page this happens on please?
Unfortunately not. The hang is encountered on an internal Gerrit installation. I've tried to reproduce it in other deployments I could provide a link to, to no avail.

Without a way to reproduce or bisect the issue there really isn't much we can do I'm afraid.
