When switching from other tab to a tab that with video playing, the video takes several seconds to play correctly

Reported by human.p...@gmail.com, Feb 27 2017

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/57.0.2987.74 Safari/537.36

Example URL:
https://youtu.be/g2T80mtg-1c?t=6m46s

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Open any high-quality videos, such as this one: https://youtu.be/g2T80mtg-1c?t=6m46s make sure to change its quality to 1080p60
2. Start the playback.
3. Switch to another tab.
4. Switch back to the video tab.

What is the expected behavior?
The video should be playing as normal as soon as you switched back.

What went wrong?
While the audio is smooth throughout the process, the video takes quite a few seconds (more obvious on low-end computers [spec shown above] but still noticeable even with a relatively high-end desktop computer) to recover. It will pause or play in very low FPS in the first few seconds.

Did this work before? Yes

Is it a problem with Flash or HTML5? HTML5

Does this work in other browsers? Yes

GpuProcessHostUIShim: The GPU process exited normally. Everything is okay.

It only starts in recent few months but I'm not sure about the exact regression window.

This should be the experiment we run in M57/58. Could you try opening chrome://flags and changing the flag called "Optimize background video playback." to Disabled, restart Chrome and see if the issue still reproduces?
Ah, that makes sense.

I disabled it, and it does improve the situation *a lot*.

To be more accurate, It still has a very small pause when switching back to the video tab, but I assume that's just because of my laptop is old.

If you don't mind, I actually have another problem which I'm now wondering if related to the experiment as well: when you open other pages, especially pages with video players in the *background* (by middle-click or ctrl-click), the front-end, now-playing YouTube video will pause/lag/stuck/pop/crack (whatever you call it, not sure which word to use) once or twice. It's quite annoying.

Thanks for confirming switching the experiment off helped.

No, the multiple tabs behavior sounds like an independent issue.
We do defer loading the background tab video until the tab is foregrounded but I'm not sure how that would affect the current video. Dale?
Generally audio glitching is a load issue. If you have audio-only players in the background do you still get glitching? Was the glitching better with "optimize video playback" enabled?
I can't seem to find "optimize video playback" option. Or you're talking about the "Optimize background video playback" one mentioned before?

Anyway, it's not 100% reproducible, that's why I was hesitating to report it. It's more likely to happen when the browser is heavily used (like lots of tabs), though.

I will try to get a better STR sooner or later, including test with audio-only players in the bg.

>We do defer loading the background tab video until the tab is foregrounded

yeah I'm aware. To clarify, the video in the background doesn't really load, as we expected. It's the moment when the bg page loads the *player* (I assume, since I can't really see the background tabs :D) that causing the now-playing video's audio to pop/crack.

Unable to reproduce it on Win 10 using 57.0.2987.74 & 57.0.2987.88.
Is it related to issue 688618 .
Status: WontFix (was: Unconfirmed)
when "Optimize background video playback" is turned on, (on by default after Chrome 57 build), the occasionally delay when switch video playback to foreground tab is known and acceptable.
FWIW the video catching up could also be emphasized by https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=709302 (although YouTube doesn't do src= playback).
