Issue description
UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:51.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/51.0
Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. I start google chrome (not chromium) and I let it run for a while.
2. Later if I run `lsof | awk '{ print $2; }' | uniq -c | sort -rn | head` I get a process with over 30k files opened
3. Which then I confirm is chrome by running `ps -aux | grep <pid>`
What is the expected behavior?
What went wrong?
The number of file descriptors varies with the number of tabs opened.
I'm currently at 13 tabs and 31k files opened.
This has caused several times to freeze my system, due to too many files opened (confirmed in syslog).
Did this work before? N/A
Chrome version: 54.0.2840.90 Channel: n/a
OS Version: Ubuntu 16.04
Flash Version: Shockwave Flash 24.0 r0

Well, the test team will answer only on monday so maybe you can provide more info until then: 1. check if the issue is present on some or all sites 2. try a new Chrome user profile (under the browser profile switch icon) 3. try disabling extensions on chrome://extensions page (or open an incognito window - in case you didn't allow extensions to run in incognito) 4. try older versions of Chrome and in case the problem wasn't present in those find the smallest version range where the regression appeared.

5. try the most recent Chrome canary, currently v58

Hi, 1. The issue is persistent, no matter what sites are opened. 2. Switching user profile didn't help. 3. Disabled extensions but the issue persist. When Chrome is opened without them, there are already 15k file descriptors, which quickly sum up to 25k when I start opening tabs. 4 and 5. Is there a official place to download different Chrome versions ? I found https://www.ubuntuupdates.org/ppa/google_chrome and will be trying google-chrome-unstable, which is version 58.0.3013.3-1.

Confirmed that version 58.0.3013.3-1 has this issue. Where can I find previous versions of chrome for Ubuntu 16.04 ? Also, I'm starting to wonder if I'm using correctly the lsof command. I followed the comments in this askubuntu thread: http://askubuntu.com/a/181408/483218

OP, please try opening Chrome's task manager (Shift + Esc), and adding the file descriptors column by right clicking on the header and choosing "File descriptors" Does that show a large amount of FDs too?
,

It doesn't !
Largest amount is 350 FDs, for the Browser task.
The weird thing is that right now the Browser task has pid 6446, which is the same pid that appears at the top of `lsof | awk '{ print $2; }' | uniq -c | sort -rn | head` whit 27k FDs
