web.whatsapp.com is taking a long time to load

Issue description

App Version: 56.0.2924.79 stable
iOS Version: 10.2.1
Device: iPhone
URL: web.whatsapp.com

Precondition:
Set the Wifi on device to GIN 2g or 3G

Steps to reproduce:
  1.  Set the Wifi network to 2G 
  2.  Launch chrome. 
  3.  Open URL : web.whatsapp.com 
  4.  Chrome Menu --> Request desktop site

Observed results:
Notice that page remains in loading state for a long time.

Expected results:
Web version of whatsapp should be displayed with scanner code

Number of times you were able to reproduce: 3/5
Bug reproducible after clean install: Yes
Bug reproducible after clearing cache and cookies: Yes
Bug reproducible on Chrome Mobile on Android: Not tested
Bug reproducible on Safari/Firefox:
Firefox: On firefox we have the option to request desktop for mobile version of website, but it is not displaying scanner code to access whatsapp web version

Safari: NA - Automatically directs to www.whatsapp.com and do not have option for request desktop

Mike, could you please check if this issue is reproducible with stock WKWebView.
I am not able to reproduce in the same way, even with 2g. When I test, the QR code always loads quicker than in the video.

You can request desktop site in Safari (although the feature is quite hidden), can you please test and compare to Safari? (To request Desktop Site, choose "Open In" toolbar icon at center bottom of screen, then choose "Request Desktop Site" from the bottom page actions row.)
Thanks michaeldo!  Checked on Safari Browser, its taking same amount of time on Safari too to load the page.
Thanks for checking, I don't think we can do anything to improve the loading speed in that case. It looks like this is an issue with WKWebView or with the number/size of resources the site is trying to download (or both). We could notify WhatsApp about this issue, but I didn't find a way to contact them outside of Twitter or Facebook on their website.

Would users generally need to navigate to the Desktop version of this page on their phone's browser?
Yes.  On mobile browsers web.whatsapp.com is displayed only on Desktop version.
Should we close this as WAI?
