Wrong version displayed in Control Panel for Chrome Standalone Enterprise file.

Project Member Reported by msrchandra@chromium.org, Feb 22 2017

Issue description

Chrome Version: Chrome Beta# 57.0.2987.74 and Chrome Dev# 58.0.3018.3 / 4.
OS: Windows 10 (64 - bit)

What steps will reproduce the problem?
(1) Install 64 - bit Google Chrome Standaloneenterprise.msi
(2) Navigate to chrome://version and check for the version.
(3) Now open Control Panel and notice the version of Google Chrome. It is displayed as 66.242.32771

What is the expected result?
Version under chrome://version and Control Panel should be same.

What happens instead?
Version under chrome://version and Control Panel are different.

Note: This is frequently seen on Windows 10.
Once reproduced on Windows 7 & 8.1.
This issue is seen only 64 - bit PGO and Clang builds.
Attaching screenshots for reference.

@grt -- Could you please look into the issue, kindly re-assign if this is not related to your changes.
Thank You.

58.0.3013.3 (current dev, first dev containing the fix) works for me. my steps:
- uninstall chrome
- install the msi
- wait a few moments, then check the Programs and Features control panel

Please let me know if I missed some of your steps. Thanks.

Note also that my recent change fixed updating the DisplayVersion when Chrome auto-updates. Installs from the .msi itself are unaffected. That said, I'm certainly interested in fixing any issues with keeping the DisplayVersion up to date. Could you send me C:\Windows\Temp\chrome_installer.log and %TEMP%\chrome_installer.log from one of the M58 test cases? Note that the fix hasn't made it into an M57 build yet, so no surprises if it doesn't yet work there.

Lowering priority and removing RGV since this doesn't seem to be a blocker and doesn't contain any confidential info.

FYI: the merge for issue +++ first made it into 57.0.2987.75, so it isn't in 57.0.2987.74.

@grt -- Thank You for the update.
As per Comment# 2, installing #58.0.3013.3 msi file the version is shown correctly under Control Panel.
But for #58.0.3018.3 msi file, we are seeing the wrong version in Control Panel as displayed in the screenshots and this is happening only for 64 - bit Chrome.
Attaching chrome_installer_log files for both Dev# 58.0.3018.3 and Beta# 57.0.2987.74.

Note: Just to update, after installing msi file wrong version is displayed in Control Panel. Refreshing the control panel again displays the correct version of msi file.

Please let me know if anything else is needed.
Thank You.

Ah, are you saying that initially the version was wrong, but after waiting a bit and refreshing the control panel, it shows the correct version?
@grt -- Yes. Initial version is displayed wrong, refreshing Control Panel after few seconds changes the msi file version changes to the version displayed under chrome://version.
Thank You.

Thank you for the clarification. This is working as expected -- there is a 10 second delay before the DisplayVersion is updated.
