It does work on current ToT with a Pixel phone. Will test it on Nexus 6P once I have one available.

I saw something similar just now when tried with 6P using Chrome canary version 58.0.3026.0 and VrCore build version 1.2.146064240. In my case the screen was all black except for the white middle eye dividing line and the settings gear icon.

It seems that the background shows up for a little bit until the site is fully loaded. After this, the site displays correctly. I'm using the same Chrome Canary and VrCore versions. The background bug is reported here: https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=697180.
