Make search more flexible (partial matches, synonyms, etc) |
|||||||||||
Issue descriptionChrome Version: M56+ OS: All What steps will reproduce the problem? (1) go to chrome://settings (2) search for "clear settings" "clear history" "erase history" "history" "clear data" ect (this is just one of many examples) (3) There's no result What is the expected result? 1. Partial matches (like "clear data") should find relevant results like "clear browsing data" 2. Ideally, keyword mapping can help the user find the right settings even if it's not an exact match. If a user is searching for "erase history" it's pretty clear they're looking for "clear browsing data" What happens instead? The user thinks there's no match.

Also, there are some menu items changing that the search bar will not find after MD, such as: - "Reset settings" becomes "Reset" (if a user types "reset settings" after MD, they get no results) - "Show advanced settings" becomes "Advanced" - "Hostname pattern" becomes "Enter the web address"

there's a long-standing bug request about searching for synonyms, but there's no currently no infrastructure for synonyms or "did you mean?" for misspellings. every time a string changes, this comes up. i don't think it's new or specific to md-settings, it's just there are more than the average number of changes in md-settings.

dpapad@ - is there any chance this is going to get picked up? I think it would be super helpful, especially for sections like networking.

This is unlikely to be picked up before M70 due to other ongoing efforts. Having said that, there is quite a bit of research and fleshing out needed, on how this feature would work, and be implemented, that someone (PM side?) could start on exploring, if they have cycles.
