We repro'd it on N5X and N6P both on GoogleGuest, We have attached net-Internals for one of the session, is there something in network that was preventing us from loading that video ? Is there a way to know why we got status code 503 for Chrome but not other browsers on same phone and network ? It feels this is a compatibility issue but if investing effort does not make sense we can close the bug.

How sure are you that it's Chrome only? 503 should be expected to be transient: 503 Service Unavailable. The server is currently unable to handle the request due to a temporary overloading or maintenance of the server. The implication is that this is a temporary condition which will be alleviated after some delay

I can reproduce it on my Nexus 5X + Android 7.1.1 In the video (https://youtu.be/Y6QuqW2sXrg): screen on the top is FireFox 51.0.3 screen on the bottom is Chrome 55.0.2883.91 (I have not received update to M56 yet) Thanks

Order to play video in firefox vs Chrome doesn't matter, we cannot get to play the video in Chrome. Again, if investing effort to find RC does not make sense we can close the bug.

Ok I reprod this just once on a 5X, but I've retried like 20 times and can't do it again. Maybe it's affected by a finch trial dalecurtis@?

Oh.. I just looked at the net capture. The request that fails with 503 is for /Mobile/GetEpisode which returns html containing the video element that they insert into the page. So this is failing way before media gets involved. The 503 response comes from cloudflare. But since you can reliably reproduce this, and it doesn't happen with FF, maybe it's a bug in the net stack or compression proxy? I'll let them decide what to do.

It appears that the site was being fetched via proxy.googlezip.net, and then switched to direct HTTP for the two requests that failed with 503. watk: I'd surmise that the site successfully loads if the data reduction proxy is disabled?

I only reprod this issue once after trying 20 or so times. And that one time I did have data saver enabled. But I definitely can't say with any certainty, sorry. hongchichang@ and jainabhishek@ had consistent repros though.

Videos do not play correctly in Chrome 57 for Android when Data Saver is on, even when served over HTTPS. I would consider this a bug, since the Data Saver claims it will not optimize or see videos served over HTTPS. To reproduce - go to Settings and Disable Data Saver - open https://www.reigndesign.com/ - observe video playing in the background - go to Settings and Enable Data Saver - open https://www.reigndesign.com/ Expected: video plays Actual: video does not play

If Data Saver is on, videos also don't play in Incognito mode, despite https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/2392284?co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid&hl=en asserting that "Data Saver won't work if you're on secure pages (addresses that start with https://) or if you're browsing in private with Incognito mode."

Hello mattmayer.com I had no issues playing video https://www.reigndesign.com/assets/videos/bg-video.mp4 directly in Chrome - M57 on android with data saver on or off. In the meanwhile, team is looking at 701060 where canvas is not rendering mp4 on M57. Please see if this addresses your issue else please try to find affected CSS / HTML element that might be causing this issue and raise another bug so that team can look into it.

Superficially, this appears to be due to Data Saver disabling autoplay when enabled. tbansal@, please confirm. dahlke@, fyi.
