FR to turn off chrome cast remote notifications on chromebooks

Project Member Reported by jgodinez@chromium.org, Feb 14 2017

Issue description

-Description:
Provide option to disable "Show remote control notifications" similar to
the android implementation.

-Use case:
Organizations like my school have dozens of chromecasts throughout the
building and the remote control notification is a very confusing addition
in such an environment. It only presents a single casting instance at a
time, instead of a comprehensive list and prevents users from casting to
their own device through that menu

-Motivation:
In an organization with multiple casting destinations, it can be very
confusing to click on settings and see that you are apparently casting
YouTube to someone else's TV. Many users have then hit the stop button,
killing someone's existing cast. This feature would be perfectly useful in
the residential environment, but not so in an enterprise environment.
Individual users and the admin console should be able to disable the
feature to prevent possible chaos.

-Existing workarounds:
We do not currently have a workaround.

When this feature rolled out in android, they included the ability to turn it off. I don't understand why Chrome didn't do the same. I have to assume my organization is not the only one with multiple chromecasts and chromebooks.

Might this be related to recently-fixed Issue #683908 ?
Disabling media playback flag works locally, but it would be nice to be able to disable that from the Admin console. Disabling media playback does not affect the ability to google cast from the browser.

Max, is this something you can look into and prioritize?
Can you add a screenshot of the behavior you're seeing?
Here you go. Obviously, my computer is not casting at the time.

That is exactly what we are seeing too. The user then assumes they are casting so they hit stop, which then stops the actual person from casting (usually a teacher) very, very, very annoying.

Thanks, understood. Let me raise the priority and we'll figure out a good solution for this.

This is the same bug as the original one: 682456, which was duped to 683908.
683908 says it was fixed? Why are we still having the issue then?
Because the fix, according to 683908, is in M58 which hasn't been released yet.
same happening here :(

We were having issues with Teachers clicking "Stop Casting" because they were going to the Status area on the bottom right to cast and that was the only option, they would keep clicking Stop Casting until they disconnected everybody and then click on their device to cast. The disconnected Teachers would then do the same. We have explained this to the Teachers but disconnects are continuing which I believe may be due to Students playing around. I will disable Student ability to cast so I can isolate the cause but I think the casting should be modified as follows.

Eliminate the "Stop Casting" button and force users to go through the same dialog they get from the three dot menu even if they use the status area. If a user attempts to cast to a device in use the current user should be prompted with a request showing the username that wants to interrupt. They can either approve it or note the name so we can address the issue with the person who is causing problems.
We are having the same issue and for this reason we had to shut off the feature on our chromebooks so students didn't accidently kick the teacher off, but unfortunately, we now can't have our students project their projects. Please add something to fix this issue.

What is going on with this? We would like to re-enable student casting?
This was resolved for me as of Chrome 57
