Memory Leak

Reported by chaseb...@gmail.com, Feb 12 2017

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/56.0.2924.76 Safari/537.36 OPR/43.0.2442.957 (Edition EXP90)

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Start chrome
2. Visit wowhead.com
3. search for something

What is the expected behavior?
Search, load page, and then stop loading.

What went wrong?
The page continued to load every 10 seconds, each time the memory usage went up.

Did this work before? Yes 56

Chrome version: 56.0.2924.87 Channel: stable
OS Version: 10.0.14393
Flash Version:

The screen shot shows the memory usage of the tab and the task manager while on the page in question. I watched it for a one minute duration. Went from 200mb to over 800mb. Terminated Chrome to prevent a crash.

I upgraded from a HDD to an SSD. This problem is not present at all on HDD. I tried multiple release Channels.

I decided to use a recording to show you vs a static screenshot.

Stable - #56.0.2924.87 (64-bit)

For this demo I used stable. The problem is still present but does not happen as quickly as it would in Beta or Dev builds.
I did note that it took far longer to reach the 800mb as I presented at first. With the new user, it took around 3 minutes to reach 800mb.
Even then, it still continued to climb, albeit slower, the problem did not go away with a new user and no extensions.

The page loads new ads every so often, Each time this happens, I get ~100mb spike in a second. Even while not loading ads, memory continued to climb. But you can see I went from 140mb to over 500mb in the period I showed you.
Should I try another website?

I effectively can't use Chrome on this computer with this SSD. It's bizarre.

I purchased an SSD the other day and fresh installed Windows 10. All the correct drivers are installed and not malfunctioning. I took the SSD out and put the HDD back in again today. Booted Windows, all was normal. This issue does not at all exist when using it. The most Chrome used was 300mb on wowhead.com. I put my SSD back in and removed Chrome for now. After some searching around, it seems Chrome does not play nice with SSD. If it helps its a Samsung 850 Evo.

Stable: 800mb+ memory leak / usage
Beta: 500mb+ memory leak / usage
Dev: 400mb+ memory leak / usage
Canary: Memory leak / usage not an issue

It seems as if the problem is taken care of in #58.0.3012.0. Which is good news. Tested on the SSD. Again, there is no continual memory usage on the HDD in any version.
Thanks for your reply.
Tested in chrome # 56.0.2924.87,Dev #58.0.3004.3, Beta #57.0.2987.54 and canary #58.0.3012.0 on win 10.0 and 7 and not able to reproduce the issue usage went from 120mb to 220mb and after that deceasing the usage. Unable to attach the screen cast due to huge MB file.

@chasebabb:Could you please let me know if any similar test url of the issue which would help us to triage the issue further.

Thanks in Advance.
I have figured it out! An embed iframe, from a third party, that Wowhead recently added to the bottom of every page was the culprit. It was not directly related to Chromium. This issue was present in Chromium based Opera as well. Firefox and Edge were not as bad. Since the block memory and cpu usage have normalised in all tested browsers. You can mark this is resolved or something. I'm going to reach out to the Wowhead team. Thanks for the help.
