Device chooser says "Get help", Page Info says "Learn more" |
||||||||||||||||||||||
Issue descriptionThe Bluetooth/USB device chooser says "Get help", whereas Page Info says "Learn more" for a very similar purpose (both link to a help center article explaining the surface). Also the "Get help" sentence is part of a sentence that says "Get help while scanning for devices", but clicking on "Get help" closes the bubble and opens a new tab. Could we consider changing "Get help while scanning for devices" to "Learn more" in pursuit of UI consistency and simplicity?

(+maxwalker as FYI for page info) +srahim@ for UX writing help: Historically we've been trying to move away from "Learn more." ainslie@ sees it as a crutch for shuffling a lot of info behind a click. "Get help" was (my) way of getting around that. Using the term in an action-y way seems to go over better in review. This dialog was designed nearly two years ago, and page info long before that, so we can definitely revisit the decision. Would be great to land on a policy there (or if you can make a recommendation now for this particular combo feel free.)

srahim, either you can take this on now (thanks), or we'll leave it as was approved in recent UI review (please close).

1) ainslie's point is that we rely heavily on help article links instead of explaining things in the UI text. So first I'd ask if we could make the "X wants to pair..." sentence more clear. What is "X wants to pair" trying to say? It's not clear to me. WDYT of "X is scanning for devices to pair..." 2) Is there any plan to implement the inline help libraries in Chrome? With inline help, you don't leave the page, and thus "Get help" makes sense. 3) It's a well-established pattern that "Learn more" = "open a help article," and I'm reluctant to change the wording when we don't change the resulting behavior. I have to agree that "Get help while..." here makes it sound like the help will be opened inline, i.e. not close the bubble and go to a new page. I will follow up w/Alex on the use of inline help libraries. Otherwise, it's useful for users to know that "Learn more" always opens a new help page. "Learn more about pairing devices" - if the link is really needed, which I'm not convinced of.

shrahim@ will weigh in on the title change in the other bug on that: https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=689286 and will talk with ainslie@ about the in-help library thing and learn more plan to decide what to do there.

srahim@ any updates on this issue, or on the plan to implement inline help libraries in Chrome?

At this time, we have no plans to implement inline help libraries in Chrome. My preference would be to remove this link, because clicking the link closes the bubble and opens a new tab, which is probably now what the user wants in this scenario.

To remove the link we would need to include much more explanatory text in the dialog. Cancelling the dialog while the user learns more is fine. When they are done they can return to the site and repeat their last action to open the dialog again. |
