Live region: Selected message confirmation in Gmail

Project Member Reported by chaok@google.com, Feb 6 2017

Issue description

Chrome Version: 58.0.3004.0 (Official Build) canary(64-bit)
OS: Win10
Screen reader: NVDA 2016.4 and JAWS 18

“Gmail is my main tool. Selected states are only reported when you move away from the message. When you press X to select, it is quiet. When you move the cursor to the arrow keys, it then verbalizes.

What steps will reproduce the problem?
(1) Using the above combo
(2) Gmail.com
(3) NVDA+SPACEBAR to switch to focus mode > X to select message

What is the expected result?
# selected (so, user can keep track of total messages selected like in Inbox)

What happens instead?
Silence--only possible to tell if message is selected by moving focus away/back and hearing "selected" prefix

Is this a Chrome issue at all? Or is this a website issue?

If this is a Chrome issue, presumably it'd be in Blink, not UI?

Kevin, can you clarify if this was filed by an external user or if you experienced this yourself? Also does it work correctly with any other browser / screen reader combination or is it broken in all of them?

If it works correctly with NVDA and Firefox, for example, then we should look at that.

@pkasting, all accessibility bugs are in the UI>Accessibility component, there's no separate bug for Blink accessibility. I've been working on trying to split accessibility bugs into more components, but for now this is correctly categorized.
