Issue description
Chrome Version : 58.0.3004.0 through at least 51.0.2682.0
Other browsers tested:
Firefox: OK (47.0.1, 50.1.0)
What steps will reproduce the problem?
Attempting to launch the application from chrome.exe.
What is the expected result?
Launch of the browser.
What happens instead?
Chrome.exe will not execute and instead displays an error message: "Entry Point Not Found - The procedure entry point ReleaseSRWLockExclusive could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll."
In the Last Known Good Version, 51.0.2682.0, the error instead is: "Entry Point Not Found - The procedure entry point InitOnceExecuteOnce could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll."
Please provide any additional information below. Attach a screenshot if possible.
This problem appears similar to an issue that prevented Windows XP players from playing X-COM: Enemy Unknown in which versions of Kernel32.dll found in Vista or later are not present in the Windows XP version of the DLL.
The workaround for that issue may be useful in remedying this problem.

I knew that the Chrome browser itself had officially ended support. I suppose I didn't understand the relationship between Chromium and Chrome, however. I'd been informed that Chromium still supports XP even though Chrome doesn't. Would you know of any forks that might have XP support?

I don't know. Judging by [1] and [2], it's not easy to re-implement those features that require newer Windows. [1]: https://groups.google.com/a/chromium.org/forum/#!topic/chromium-discuss/RmMn2mQlYp0 [2]: https://github.com/Eloston/ungoogled-chromium/issues/75

As the error message indicates, on XP the API that Chrome uses is not available. Chrome shares the same code base as Chromium, thus the API is also used in Chromium. Theoretically you can replace such API usages with API available in XP and build Chromium yourself, or even dig up old Chromium source that supported XP. The Chromium project does not work on making the code run on XP any more, so closing this. |
