does it only repro on Linux? I couldn't repro it on Mac or Win. I am using Chrome 57 dev build.

Comment 3 by jfer...@gmail.com, Feb 8 2017

I just installed chromium 58.0.3006.0 on Windows 10 and went to http://churchonthedrive.org/media/sermons/ and had the same problem.

Comment 4 by jfer...@gmail.com, Feb 8 2017

OK, I just tried the 56.... version with no problem but then updated to the 58.0.3006.0 64 bit version and did have the problem under windows 10. I'm running a 55.0.2883.87 64 bit version on Ubuntu. I'll check for a 56. version for ubuntu/linux and try it.

This looks to be chromium specific bug and I am able to reproduce the issue on the oldest chrome version: 52.0.2716.0 (Developer Build) (64-bit) on Windows-10 and Linux Ubuntu 14.04 as well. Downloaded chromium from https://commondatastorage.googleapis.com/chromium-browser-snapshots/index.html?prefix=Win_x64/

Dale, this seems a chromium bug instead of chrome. I couldn't repro this issue on any chrome build on Win,Mac or Linux.
what's the appropriate way to resolve?
Labels: Needs-Feedback
jfervin@ could you please check the issue on latest chromium version and update the thread if the issue still persists.

Thanks,

I am currently running chromium Version 57.0.2987.98 Built on Ubuntu, running on Ubuntu 16.10 (64-bit) and it still does it. Chrome Version 57.0.2987.133 (64-bit) works correctly for this issue.

You can test on this page: http://churchonthedrive.org/media/sermons/

Comment 11 by jfer...@gmail.com, Apr 20 2017

Did you mean a newer version than 57.0.2987?

fervin@gmail.com, I can never repro this issue even on an old Chrome build. Are you seeing it on Chrome or Chromium browser?

Comment 13 by jfer...@gmail.com, Apr 26 2017

Chromium Version 57.0.2987.98 Built on Ubuntu, running on Ubuntu 16.10 (64-bit).

Doesn't happen with Chrome or Firefox.

Chromium doesn't support mp3 by default.

Comment 15 by jfer...@gmail.com, Apr 26 2017

The Chromium on my Ubuntu system does play MP3 files. If I go to File, Open File, and select an MP3 file, it plays correctly. On the specified web page (http://churchonthedrive.org/media/sermons/), I think it's more of a display problem than an MP3 problem. I don't actually get to the point where I tell it to play the file.

I re-iterate, I think it's more of a display problem than an MP3 problem. I don't actually get to the point where I tell it to play the file.

Comment 16 by jfer...@gmail.com, Apr 26 2017

a) I thought everything supported playing MP3 files and
b) if I go to the direct link to the file my Chromium plays the file fine: http://churchonthedrive.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/20170423Sermon.mp3
Status: Unconfirmed (was: WontFix)
Hm, you may have the codec in your build then but the branding is not "Chrome" so canPlayType, etc pretends it's not supported. See https://www.chromium.org/audio-video for more info.

What does "javascript:document.createElement('video').canPlayType('video/mp4');" output in your Chromium build if pasted into the address bar (without the double quotes)?

It shows "maybe" in Chrome for me; I'd assume it's an empty string for Chromium build.

Furthermore, the site seems to contain logic that detects media capabilities of the browser. In particular, it checks canPlayType('video/mp4') and also seems to parse the User-Agent to detect if it's a Chromium build.

If it's not your build, it's like the site's logic that's wrong. You'd have to provide feedback to the site authors then.

Comment 18 by jfer...@gmail.com, Apr 26 2017

if I put javascript:document.createElement('video').canPlayType('video/mp4'); it says maybe in chromium, if I put javascript:document.createElement('audio').canPlayType('audio/mp3'); is says probably

Remember we are talking about mp3 audio files, not mp4 video. But I did see "chrome only" for mp3 in that link that was mentioned.

Status: WontFix (was: Unconfirmed)
You're using some Ubuntu specific build of Chromium with an unsupported codecs package. You should switch to an official build, otherwise we can't provide support.
