Issue descriptionIn kiosk mode, when the Chrome OS device reboots, the volume gets back to default. (User sets to MAX but after reboot, it is back to the default volume level) Please find additional context here - https://b.corp.google.com/issues/31051906

Hi Michael, can you please try to repro this issue and confirm it is happening in M56 stable?

I was able to reproduce the symptom on the latest M-56 Stable build 9000.83.0. Apparently any change to the volume that is made in the kiosk app does not change the system's volume level as set on the sign-in screen.

Hey Michael, which kiosk app(s) did you use?

I used Chrome Sign Builder playing a YouTube video, which has a volume control.

How exactly do you change the volume in the kiosk app?

I'm not certain what the system call for that is, but YouTube does give a speaker icon and volume slide-bar that does work on the chrome device, but only as long as the kiosk app is active. Once the device is rebooted the sound level goes back to the original system volume setting. (This might actually be a feature).

Afaik that is Youtube volume setting which is separate from the device/system volume. #1 I can change the system volume inside the Kiosk app using the keyboard volume shortcuts. If I reboot immediately, the volume is not saved. If I navigate to a different page, *then* reboot, the volume is saved. #2 I can change the system volume by exiting the Kiosk app, then using the system tray volume control. Again, if I reboot immediately, the setting isn't saved. If I login first to an account, *then* reboot, the volume is saved. The volume is also saved if I do a normal shutdown (as opposed to rebooting). So apparently, the volume isn't saved if we do a reboot "too fast". Michael, can you confirm the behaviour that I see?

I found that using the keyboard volume shortcuts in a kiosk app would always affect the system sound level setting; I didn't have to navigate to a different page, and the change would persist whether I did a reboot, shutdown or power-off. Changing the volume level via the youtube speaker icon would affect the volume of the video, but never changed the system's sound level.

I'm having issues reproducing this bug. I follow the same steps they outlined in the linked bug, and for me the volume is saved across reboot (I use shutdown + boot instead of hard reboot). If they still have a problem, we need much more context. Exact environment, exact steps. (I'm testing on the newest dev build, btw) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Summary: Currently, when the Chrome OS device reboots, the volume gets back to default. (User sets to MAX but after reboot, it is back to the middle) ## Existing workarounds ## 1. Boot the Chromebox 2. Connect mouse and keyboard 3. Quit the Kiosk mode and enter Chrome OS mode 4. Change volume settings 5. Launch the Kiosk app. 6. Disconnect the mouse and keyboard. Repeat this at each reboot of the device. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- P.S. Why do they even reboot the device every day?

Can we marked this as fixed, it looks like this issue is not reproducible and the volume maintains its levels after reboot. Is that correct?

Yes. Marking it as Won't fix. |
