Setting up the policies for the Omnibox search provider causes the user avatar to disappear |
||||||||||||
Issue descriptionVersion of Google Chrome (Wrench-> About Google Chrome): 55.0.2883.105 Customer set up the policy for the Omnibox search provider (Google in this case) in User Settings and this resulted in disappearance of the avatar picture and waffle menu at the top right when a new tab is opened. I was able to reproduce the issue on my end with test account and . It seems to affect only new tab pages, as when open a different service page (Gmail, Drive etc.), the avatar and menu were present. Tried with settings for different search providers - still reproducible. I was also able to reproduce on my test domain and test user. I have also tried to set different search provider locally and have same issue (example screenshots with Yahoo as default). I can repro this on 56 locally by just changing the setting locally, likely not much we can do for 55 at this point but 56 hits stable soon. It seems like if you change to a search provide other than google.com for the omnibox, that the new tab page loses the user specific UI bits in the top right. Albert, do you know whom should be looking at something like this? Not sure if this falls under Chrome OS UI, or if it is more specific to the new tab page itself?

Yeah, this would be a new tab page issue. I used to route those to odean@, but I think he's moved on to other things.

The NTP is tied to the default search provider - if you choose a different one from Google, then the NTP will be different (and, e.g., not have the Google identity widget in the top right). That is working as intended. What's not working as intended is that when you override it to Google via policy, you also get the generic NTP. My guess is that the policy somehow messes up the ntp_url setting that's tied to the search provider.
