WebGL with llvmpipe doesn't start reliably

Project Member Reported by kbr@chromium.org, Jan 23 2017

Issue description

A colleague (Neil Gershenfeld) reports that WebGL doesn't start reliably when running on top of Mesa with the LLVMpipe software rasterizer. It seems that context creation intermittently fails. about:gpu follows. This is on an AWS EC2 c4.xlarge instance.

It would be ideal if we could reproduce this in house, but this is not a configuration on which we focus.

However, with pending SwiftShader integration, this will be expected to work, so at that time (and perhaps before) we should put tests on the waterfall which exercise software rasterization.

When SwiftShader's fully integrated into Chromium then we should run all of the GPU tests against SwiftShader, including the pixel tests, in order to make sure that it's reliable.

Is it a different issue than https://crbug.com/264818 ? Could you get the same about:gpu but when "GPU process crash count" is not 0 providing that it prints logs of previous failures. Or is there any other way to get some infos about these failures ?

Julien: I don't know. I don't test on this configuration, so if you are passionate about making it work and can debug it, that would be greatly appreciated.

Hi kbr@, now that SwiftShader is fully integrated into Chromium and all of the GPU tests run against SwiftShader, can we close this issue?
Status: WontFix (was: Assigned)
Yes, I think it's a good solution to recommend to this colleague that they use SwiftShader rather than the system-provided llvmpipe.
