Display command line error message on no available fonts

Project Member Reported by drott@chromium.org, Jan 18 2017

Issue description

Spun off from:
https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=676728#c3

When no default font is available, Chrome seems to release assert and exit. We should probably show a more meaningful error message on the command line so that the cause for the crash exit can be identified.
