Unable to sync after password change

Project Member Reported by katbrown@google.com, Jan 16 2017

Issue description

Chrome Version : 55.0.2883.95 (Official Build) (64-bit
OS version : 10.12.2

What is the expected result?

To be able to sign into a Chrome Profile and sync profile

What happens instead?
After Bruno changed his account password he is not longer able to sync. When he signs into Chrome he gets this message:https://screenshot.googleplex.com/WcNk0PdtLEh

When he puts in his new password it will take it but once he closes chrome the same error message will come back.

sync-internals https://screenshot.googleplex.com/d1doVMrJhLa

We have removed and added his profile as well as uninstalling reinstalling

Hi all, Bruno was able to fix this so I guess this bug can be closed.

1) Quit Chrome (cmd+Q)
2) rm -rf "./Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome" ./Library/Caches/Google/Chrome
3) reboot (this is the extra step I hadn't tried before... and exactly what I can't fully explain)
4) set everything up again (sign in to enable sync, etc...)

[mac bug triage] Thanks for the update! I'll let the passwords triage team check this out and decide whether to close it or not, the fix for this doesn't seem the best for non-technical users.

I had changed my password today and was able to sync without any issues(was not having any sync pass phrase though).

As per the above comment #2, untriaged it to get addressed from Passwords team if it can be closed or anything to workup-on.

Did the message actually want the old Google password?
I am pushing this to the Sync component, because this is part of the Sync UI.

Katie, Bruno:

Is it possible that screenshots of sync-internals and sync customization were taken at different times? I've checked in the code, yellow prompt for passphrase should only be shown when "Passphrase required" is true on sync-internals.

Do you still have a repro of this bug?

Comment 8 by bfurtado@google.com, Jan 28 2017

I don't remember exactly when the screenshots were taken but yes, things may have happened between the 2 screenshots. I sent them to Katie as she was troubleshooting the issue so maybe she has a more carefully kept timeline.

To make things more clear, the problem that was happening was that (maybe coincidentally after I changed my password) Chrome started saying that something had changed on my account and I had to login again to get sync to work again (there was a warning symbol on the top-right corner of chrome). After logging in, everything looked normal and the sync-internals page looked like the 2nd screenshot.

The problem was, closing chrome and opening it again caused it to go back to saying something had changed on the account and I needed to sign in again.

This happened multiple times and even continued happening after closing chrome and deleting all the stuff in ~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome and starting it again.

After a while I rebooted the computer for unrelated reasons and the problem went away.

Hope this helps troubleshooting, otherwise, since I can't reproduce it again, I don't think I'll be able to add more data :)

Hi all,

Sorry I don't have a more exact timeline, but there are two tickets where Bruno contacted us at Techstop with timestamps. Maybe these will help?

bfurtado@: The symptoms you describe are similar to http://crbug.com/631171 , but that bug only manifested on linux and was fixed in M55. I don't think it is related.

It is hared to diagnose this issue further from screenshots you provided, about:sync screenshot looks healthy. If in the future you encounter unexpected "sign in again" prompt, could you grap screenshot of about:signin-internals?

Meanwhile I'm going to close this issue as "not repro".
