there needs to be an option to have the URL bar on screen at all times

Issue descriptionSteps to reproduce the problem: I just got a Pixel XL 2 days ago (amazing phone btw) and for a phone with such a large display, it's really silly that the URL bar 'disappears' when you scroll down (and of course, re appears when you scroll up). That feature makes sense for phones that have smaller displays, but on something the size of the Pixel XL it shouldn't do that, and at the very least there should be an option to disable it. There is more than enough room on the Pixel XL to have the URL bar present at all times and I and I'm sure many others would prefer this. At least give users the option... What is the expected behavior? What went wrong? see above Did this work before? N/A Chrome version: 55 Channel: stable OS Version: 7.1 Flash Version:

Thanks for your feedback. We experimented with disabling toolbar hiding a year ago for 10"+ tablets but received significant negative feedback (with little positive feedback) e.g. https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=604172. Therefore, we decided to keep the existing behavior. We will keep the ability to customize this behavior in mind if things change though.

Yes, please give users the choice. I love Chrome but it's very, very annoying and frustrating at this point.

Updating this as something has changed: many phones are moving to a taller aspect ratio (like the Samsung Galaxy S8) and having the toolbar disappear when you scroll down really doesn't make sense on these phones, so there really should be an option to keep the toolbar on screen at all times. Firefox has had this option for ages... (Especially try the Galaxy S8+ if you can, the bigger model of the two, and you will see how silly and unnecessary it is to have the toolbar hide when you scroll down)

Forgive me for posting here again but I was just discussing this with my friend and he pointed out that this is more of an issue with Chrome for iPhone than Android because you have to scroll up if you want to go back, because you have to scroll up to make the toolbar appear. This is because the iPhone doesn't have a system back button like Android. I'm sure Chrome for iPhone users would really appreciate being given this option...

worth updating this as the new Google Pixel 2 XL, iPhone X and Galaxy Note 8 also have taller aspect ratios. Being able to have the toolbar on screen at all times would be a great experience on these devices, there would be no downside, it's one of the reasons the industry is moving to taller aspect ratios. |
