As of now what happens in chromium is that I can see the enter vr button on various site be when I click it. There is not display in the headset and no error message.
the white glasses web vr Icon is missing from most webvr sites

Mainline Chromium does not currently support desktop HMDs. WebVR HMD support on desktop is tracked in issue 644502 .

It is expected that no displays will be returned, and applications need to handle this correctly. See https://github.com/googlevr/webvr-polyfill/issues/177.
