Flashing Grey Tiles on site with long running CSS animations

Reported by rc...@quora.com, Jan 3 2017

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_11_5) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/55.0.2883.95 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Visit reddit.com/r/overwatch
2. Observe flashing tiles

What is the expected behavior?
No flashing tiles

What went wrong?
Grey tiles flash all over my screen.

This has been happening for awhile now

https://www.dropbox.com/s/vpnfw6jaobsc51i/chromeFlashing.mov?dl=0

Did this work before? Yes not sure

Chrome version: 55.0.2883.95 Channel: stable
OS Version: OS X 10.11.5
Flash Version: Shockwave Flash 24.0 r0

works on safari

pretty sure it's related to css animations, if I disable them, the browser works properly

Is it just the reddit site that is affected?

I can't reproduce on a MacBook with Retina display with Chrome 57.0.2964.0.

Comment 3 by rc...@quora.com, Jan 3 2017

It happens on FB when the story loading animation is visible too. Was also occurring on quora.com previously, but stopped once a long running CSS animation was removed.

Also noticed that it doesn't occur when using an external monitor, only the retina display (but this issue doesn't occur in other browsers/applications).

I am using a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015) with Intel Iris Graphics 6100 1536 MB.

Comment 4 by rc...@quora.com, Jan 4 2017

It no longer occurs on that reddit site since the css on the site changed to remove the animation, but still occurs on FB with the story loading animation.

Test team, could you please try to reproduce this. Note that the problem now occurs on Facebook with Story animations.

It may also require a specific hardware match to reproduce. Note comments 3 & 4.

rcheu@,

Unable to reproduce the issue on MacBook pro Retina ( 15-inch, Mid 2014 with Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB) as per Comment#0 using chrome reported version#55.0.2883.95 & stable version-56.0.2924.76.

Could you please provide us the clear steps to reproduce the issue (on Facebook with Story animations) as per comment#4.

Thanks in advance.

I figured out what was causing this, I disabled hardware acceleration at some point and forgot to turn it back on.

From the initial video it looked like layer tiles getting rasterised late.
Retriaging to Internals>Compositing>Rasterization.

Is this the same as https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=709875 ?

FWIW I have the exact same hardware as mentioned earlier. Other members of my team have the newest macbook pro and are also seeing the same behavior.
