Most web pages get stuck/frozen/unscrollable shortly after loading

Project Member Reported by jhawkins@chromium.org, Dec 26 2016

Issue description

Chrome Version: 57.0.2951.0 (Official Build) dev (64-bit)
OS: CrOS, 9086.0.0 (Official Build) dev-channel samus

What steps will reproduce the problem?
(1) Browse random web pages (http://blog.123dapp.com/2016/12/important-news-about-the-next-chapter)
(2) Try to scroll all the way to the bottom of the page

What is the expected result?

I can keep scrolling and interact with the web page.

What happens instead?

The page appears to be frozen, most noticeably by not being able to scroll further. After browsing around in other tabs then going back to the stuck tab, the content of the tab is completely blank (white).

Trying to reload the tab (and force-reload) causes an infinite spinner and no loading result. I have to kill the tab with the task manager.

Cc: skyos...@chromium.org
+skyostil, any chance this could be throttling causing a page to get stuck? I've been seeing this a lot as well, though I don't have a good repro.

Comment 3 by dcheng@chromium.org, Dec 27 2016

Additional info:
- If multiple tabs are in the same process as the tab that originally got stuck, all the tabs are stuck.
- Closing the tab that stopped scrolling doesn't fix the other tabs.
For what it's worth, in CrOS, I believe I have been unable to close any of the tabs that are stuck (via the close button or other standard close mechanism). I can only kill the process with task manager.

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2016/12/game-on-the-best-board-games-of-2016/ is a page that reliably triggers this for me.

Re: closing
I can't close it if it's the foreground tab, but if it's a background tab, it's closeable.

Has anyone seen this on something other than ChromeOS?

Comment 9 by willg...@gmail.com, Jan 3 2017

I don't see this behavior anymore (six days without issue) on:

Version 57.0.2965.0 canary (64-bit)
Platform 9129.0.0 (Official Build) canary-channel edgar

Was happening pretty often prior to this build.
Cc: haraken@chromium.org dtapu...@chromium.org
Issue 677139 has been merged into this issue.
Anyone else still seeing this? I'm still on 57.0.2951.0 but can't repro it so I can't tell if this is fixed or not.
I can still repro. Most successful repro for me is to navigate to news.google.com, middle-click a bunch of article links to open them in new tabs. Eventually everything gets stuck. It's not a 100% reliable repro, but it happens quite often.
Hmm, I've tried this 4-5 times now with no luck. Some more details might be helpful.

What kind of machine are you using? The new tabs you're opening, are they from the same news.google domain, external sites, or a mix? About how many tabs? Do you switch to them or does the starting tab then lock up? How often would you say it repros? (~1/3, ~1/10?, more?)

If you can repro, capturing a trace may be helpful, though I recently debugged a very similar issue where the trace didn't help. Anyway, couldn't hurt if you can get one.
Sorry, it's been a long time since I've worked on Chrome directly: how do I capture a trace?
No worries, details are here[1] but basically, go to chrome://tracing and record a manual trace with all boxes checked on the left side, none on the right.

[1]https://www.chromium.org/developers/how-tos/submitting-a-performance-bug
The device is a Pixel 2. I can't repro right now, but I have a hunch that the variable causing the issue when I could repro was the network speed. I was on vacation using a very slow wifi network.

I haven't updated CrOS so I'm still on the initially-reported version (but probably need to update soon).

Comment 17 by w...@chromium.org, Jan 5 2017

Cc: bashi@chromium.org
FWIW I reported a reliably repro'ing Calendar tab hang (see issue 676461 ) in 57.0.2951.0 dev, though not related to scrolling; just leaving the tab not-visible for ~10 minutes wa sufficient for it to be unresponsive.

However, as noted in https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=676461#c8 this issue no longer repros for me, since renderer suspension was disabled.
jhawkins@: could you try to repro with disabling chrome://flags/#enable-memory-coordinator ?
If you can't repro when memory coordinator is disabled, it would be the same problem as issue 676461 .
I was able to repro reliably on gin3g, but when I disabled the enable-memory-coordinator flag, CrOS restarted and applied a pending update. I'm no longer able to repro under the previous circumstances. If the fix from the quoted bug is in dev now, it's probably a dupe I guess.
To clarify, I am now on 2970 and cannot repro given gin3g network with enable-memory-coordinator=true.
I have not seen this issue occur since update a few days ago to Version 57.0.2970.0 dev (64-bit). Prior to this update, it was happening constantly.

Issue 678562 has been merged into this issue.
Cc: alexclarke@chromium.org
Alex, this might be some more fallout from bug 674895.
Components: -Blink>Scroll Blink>Scheduling
Status: Available (was: Untriaged)
It sounds like no-one is seeing this problem anymore? I suspect the revert for 674895 fixed this.
Have not seen the problem since the update.
Status: WontFix (was: Available)
Thanks for confirming, let me close this then.

FYI we are going to try relanding that patch shortly -- hopefully without these issues this time around :)

The following revision refers to this bug:
  https://chromium.googlesource.com/chromium/src.git/+/eda1d2e08c6769ebdbae66db618a2fae609f170c

commit eda1d2e08c6769ebdbae66db618a2fae609f170c
Author: alexclarke <alexclarke@chromium.org>
Date: Thu Jan 26 18:23:44 2017

Scheduler refactoring to virtually eliminate redundant DoWorks

Note this patch, while useful in it's own right, needs base messageloop
cancellation support for full effect. Until that patch lands there may be
some pointless wakeups for canceled DoWorks. This is of particular concern
for using the scheduler on the compositor thread.

Includes fix for telemetry and tsan issues. Also fixes a lock order
inversion present in the second attempt.
