Minimize/Maximize/Close buttons disappear when Chrome is maximized

Reported by arco...@gmail.com, Dec 24 2016

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/56.0.2924.28 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Maximize Chrome

What is the expected behavior?
I should still see maximize/minimize/close buttons at the top.

What went wrong?
When I maximize Chrome, my minimize/close buttons disappear. This started happening rather suddenly.

Did this work before? Yes Unknown, but recent within the last week or two

Chrome version: 56.0.2924.28 Channel: beta
OS Version: KDE Neon (Plasma 5.8.4)
Flash Version: n/a

Screenshots of the issue:
Maximized (no buttons) : http://i.imgur.com/Aci81Yb.png
Not Maximized (buttons): http://i.imgur.com/GHNNSKz.jpg

After some searching around, I believe it may be related to this very old issue:
https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=139976

And more specifically, this old revision:
https://src.chromium.org/viewvc/chrome?revision=83173&view=revision

I am using KDE Neon with Compiz. These buttons should only disappear on Unity.

I've not made any changes to anything, it just happened out of nowhere sometime within the last week or two.

Don't have set up with KDE Neon (Plasma 5.8.4) to test and confirm this as of now. However based on the timeline of the issue and above updates from the reporter.

thomasanderson@: Could this be related to https://codereview.chromium.org/2575563002 from https://chromium.googlesource.com/chromium/src/+log/56.0.2924.21..56.0.2924.51?pretty=fuller&n=10000
ajha@ It's unlikely. Is it possible to get a more narrow bisect?

Don't spend any time tracking this down just yet. I installed KDE Neon in virtual box and do NOT have the issue I reported on the default desktop.

I'm going to try to replicate my system settings and see if I can produce the problem again. Will update later

C#3> Don't have set up with KDE Neon (Plasma 5.8.4) to bisect this.

Will wait for update as per C#4 to see if the issue is still reproducible?

Sorry guys, this has been really frustrating. I've spent at least 3 hours on three separate occasions trying but I can't reproduce my own problem in a VM. On one hand, I want to say don't worry about it.. but on the other hand this issue is wearing on my nerves. I don't want to waste anyone's time.

I know the KDE folks are working on adding a global menu back into KDE as an optional alternative... so there is perhaps a possibility that some background update to Plasma slipped in that is tricking chrome into thinking I have a global menu like Unity has.

http://blog.broulik.de/2016/10/global-menus-returning/

That's all I can think of. Otherwise, is there any way to get chrome to spit out some super verbose debug info to maybe hint at a cause?
OP when you first saw the issue, did you just switch from Unity to KDE? Or perhaps have Unity running on a separate X display like :1?

Comment 9 by arco...@gmail.com, Jan 24 2017

No, I've never used Unity. Just a basic KDE Neon install

I hadn't been making any system changes either.. it just started happening out of nowhere so I suspected an update broke it.

The problem is the following:
Since KDE Plasma 5.6 it supports the Unity launcher API (it creates a com.canonical.Unity DBus service), so once you have libunity installed(!), Chrome will start exporting e.g. download progress to it.

Unfortunately, it now thinks it's running on Unity which has window buttons in its top panel and hides them from its own window decoration.

Adding TE-NeedsTriageFromMTV as we don't have set up with KDE Neon (Plasma 5.8.4).

MTV@ Could any one from MTV please look into this issue if you have a setup there.
