Issue descriptionChrome Version:57.0.2953.0 (Official Build)5cc5609d072e90e2b1fe5d9de04bf00d45c5a5c6-refs/heads/master@{#438989} 32/64-bit. OS:Windows(7,8,8.1,10),Linux (14.04 LTS),Mac OS X(10.11.6, 10.12.1) What steps will reproduce the problem? (1)Launch chrome and navigate to chrome://md-settings/help (2)Click on 'people' option from main menu, enter any letter in search field for e.g. 't' (3)Now click on back/forward navigation button 2-3 times and simultaneously observe search icon. Actual: Flickering of search icon is seen after clicking on back/forward navigation button. Expected: No such flickering of search icon should be seen after clicking on back/forward navigation button. This is a regression issue broken in 'M56' and below is the manual regression range Good Build: 56.0.2907.0 Bad Build: 56.0.2908.0

Everytime you press forward, a new search is happening for the letter 't' (based on your repro steps), which causes the icon to transition to the "spinner", but because the search finishes very quickly it transitions back to the search icon. This behaviors seems reasonable, and not sure if there is anything to do here. Passing to @tbuckley for triaging.

Still able to reproduce the issue on Mac 10.12.1 using chrome version 57.0.2976.5. tbuckley@ could you please check and confirm on this behaviour. Thanks,

We could ensure that the spinner shows for some minimum amount of time (eg. transition in/out) so that it's less jarring.
